Chapter 9 - The Reckoning at the Docks

The ballroom of the Boston Harbor Yacht Club was illuminated by crystal chandeliers, overlooking the dark, choppy waters of the Atlantic.
Thirty high-ranking bosses and lieutenants of the New England syndicates sat around the long banquet table, sipping Scotch and muttering in hushed tones.
At the head of the table sat Salvatore Russo, an aging, silver-haired kingpin with cruel eyes and a permanent scowl.
Beside him stood Isabella, dressed in a black velvet gown, her arms crossed as she paced the floor impatiently.
"Moretti has lost his mind!" Isabella spat, addressing the assembled capos. "He is housing stray servants and pulling guns on my father's men!"
"He is compromised," Salvatore agreed, slamming his heavy fist onto the table. "We vote tonight to strip Dante of his port authority and execute the contract!"
Before a single boss could raise his hand to second the motion, the massive mahogany double doors of the ballroom blew inward with an explosive roar.
Flashbangs detonated in blinding white bursts, sending smoke and concussive sound ripping through the banquet hall.
Fifty heavily armed Moretti soldiers swarmed the room in tactical formation, their rifles sweeping the perimeter with terrifying precision.
The assembled bosses threw their hands in the air, scrambling out of their chairs as their personal bodyguards were disarmed in seconds.
Through the parting haze of smoke walked Dante Moretti.
He wore a tailored black three-piece suit, his hands resting casually in his pockets, his silver watch gleaming under the chandeliers.
And pinned prominently to the lapel of his coat, catching the light like a constellation of vengeance, were seven golden foil stars.
"Dante!" Salvatore gasped, backing against the plate-glass window, his face pale as ash. "What is the meaning of this treason?!"
"The treason occurred nine years ago, Salvatore," Dante said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper that silenced the entire hall.
He tossed a thick leather folder onto the center of the banquet table, the papers sliding across the polished mahogany.
"Those are the bank records and communications linking you to the car bomb that was meant to murder me in the North End."
Isabella scoffed, stepping forward with desperate arrogance. "You're delusional! Elena Vance died nine years ago!"
"Did she?" Dante replied, a cold, mocking smile touching his lips.
He raised his left hand, signaling toward the shattered entrance.
Elena stepped through the doorway, wearing an elegant emerald dress, holding Sophie securely in her arms.
The little girl looked around the grand room with wide, curious eyes, clutching her one-eared rabbit against her chest.
Salvatore’s jaw dropped in absolute horror, his hands trembling as he stared at the woman he had believed dead for nearly a decade.
"Elena..." Salvatore wheezed, the floor seemingly vanishing beneath his polished shoes.
"You didn't just try to murder the woman I loved, Salvatore," Dante snarled, drawing his custom automatic and leveling it directly between Russo's eyes.
"You sent hitmen tonight into the bedroom of my daughter."
A collective gasp rippled through the assembled syndicate bosses as the realization of Russo's catastrophic failure hit them.
"Dante, please... it was business! Just business!" Salvatore begged, sinking to his knees on the Persian rug.
"Touching my family isn't business, Salvatore," Dante said with terrifying calm. "It's a death sentence."
He pulled the trigger, the silenced shot cracking through the ballroom and dropping the elder Russo to the floor in eternal silence.

Isabella shrieked, falling to her knees beside her father, while Marcus stepped forward with zip-ties to take her into permanent custody.
Dante lowered his weapon, turned his back on the cowering bosses, and walked straight toward the only two people who mattered in his universe.
