Chapter 2 - The Whispers in the Shadow

The morning sun filtered through the grand stained-glass windows of the Moretti estate, casting crimson and sapphire beams across the marble entry hall.

Marcus Vale walked briskly along the loggia, carrying a leather folio under his arm, his eyes scanning the surveillance logs on his encrypted phone.

Marcus had served the Moretti family for twelve years, orchestrating logistics, cleaning up messy political entanglements, and ensuring Dante's dominance over the northern shipping routes.

He was a man who noticed every micro-expression, every change in inventory, and every stray syllable uttered inside the mansion.

As Marcus reached the grand library, he paused in the archway, his hand freezing on the heavy brass handle.

Inside, Dante stood at his desk reviewing port manifests, wearing a charcoal wool jacket tailored on Savile Row.

Resting prominently against the left lapel, catching the morning light, were three gold stars and one blue sticker arranged in a neat arc.

Marcus adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, stepping inside and clearing his throat with deliberate care.

"The northern shipment from Montreal arrived without interference, Dante," Marcus said, laying the leather folio on the mahogany surface.

"Customs cleared the shipping containers at five this morning. Everything is secured in Warehouse Four."

"Good," Dante replied without looking up from the manifest, signing his name with an antique fountain pen.

Marcus didn't leave; he remained standing on the other side of the desk, his eyes drifting back to the foil stickers.

"Are we starting a new identification system for internal clearances, boss?" Marcus asked, his tone dripping with subtle, dry intrigue.

Dante stopped writing, the nib of his pen hovering a millimeter above the parchment.

He raised his dark gaze slowly, fixing Marcus with a stare cold enough to freeze boiling water.

"Do you have a problem with my tailoring today, Marcus?" Dante asked, his voice dangerously soft.

"Not at all," Marcus replied smoothly, raising both hands in mock surrender. "I merely noticed that our reputation as the most ruthless syndicate in New England might take a hit if the Russo family sees their future son-in-law decorated like a kindergarten honor student."

"The Russo family will worry about their own borders," Dante said flatly, setting his pen down. "Isabella's father has been late on his port dues for three consecutive weeks."

"Speaking of Isabella," Marcus murmured, taking a step closer and lowering his voice. "She called me at dawn. She was not pleased about the incident in the hallway last night."

Dante leaned back in his leather chair, interlocking his scarred fingers over his chest.

"Isabella is marrying into this house, Marcus. She does not dictate who walks through its corridors."

"She believes the maid and her daughter are an unnecessary complication," Marcus warned, his gaze sharp and calculating.

"She asked me to run a full background check on Anna Miller's late husband."

A sudden, sharp tension entered the room, thickening the air between the two powerful men.

Dante’s eyes narrowed into slits. "Did she now?"

"I told her I only take orders from you," Marcus answered carefully. "However, I did take a look at the file Henry received from Cambridge."

"And?" Dante demanded, his jaw hardening into granite.

"The employment references are flawless," Marcus said, pausing just long enough to let the silence stretch. "Almost too flawless. For a woman who claims to have lived in complete obscurity, her digital footprint begins exactly thirty-six months ago."

Before Dante could press him on the matter, a small tapping sound came from the base of the heavy library door.

The door nudged open by four inches, and a pair of wide, mischievous eyes peeked through the crack.

Sophie was holding a sheet of purple glitter stars, smiling as if she owned the entire compound.
