Chapter 8 - The Father's Vow

The word daughter struck Dante with the concussive force of an artillery shell, shattering nine years of hardened stone inside his chest.

He turned his head slowly to look at the little girl sitting on the mattress beside them.

Sophie was watching him with wide, solemn eyes, clutching her one-eared rabbit, her yellow cardigan smudged with soot and blood.

He looked at her dark blonde curls, the stubborn set of her chin, and the golden star stickers clutched in her small, sticky fingers.

How had he been so blind?

She carried his mother's eyes and his own relentless stubbornness, wrapped in an innocent spirit that had walked right past his security guards.

Dante reached out with a trembling hand—a hand that had never shaken while pulling a trigger—and touched Sophie's soft cheek.

"Sophie," he whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion he had never permitted himself to feel.

"Are you sad, Mr. Dante?" Sophie asked softly, reaching out to pat his rough, bearded cheek.

"No, little star," he choked out, pulling both the child and her mother into his massive, protective embrace. "I'm not sad anymore."

Elena buried her face into his neck, weeping with the profound, exhausting relief of a woman whose nine-year nightmare had finally ended.

Dante held them against his chest, feeling the steady, fragile rhythm of their heartbeats against his ribs.

He made a silent, unshakeable vow to the heavens: no one would ever touch them again.

Not Salvatore Russo. Not Isabella. Not the entire underworld of Boston combined.

The door clicked open again, and Marcus stepped inside, his tactical weapon lowered, his expression grim.

"Dante, we intercepted a radio dispatch on the Russo frequency," Marcus reported quietly, eyeing the emotional scene with deep respect.

"Salvatore and Isabella just called an emergency meeting of the five families at the waterfront yacht club for midnight."

"They're claiming you've gone rogue and are attempting to declare you unfit to lead the commission."

Dante stood up slowly, gently kissing the top of Sophie's head before turning to face his trusted adviser.

The gentleness evaporated from his posture, replaced by a cold, majestic fury that radiated from every inch of his towering frame.

"Marcus, assemble the entire northern garrison," Dante commanded, his voice ringing with absolute, lethal authority.

"Every soldier, every driver, and every heavy asset we have in the state."

"And what are our orders, boss?" Marcus asked, a dark, dangerous grin touching his lips.

"We are going to a wedding rehearsal," Dante replied coldly. "And then we are going to bury the Russo family."
