Chapter 8 - The Limousine Arrives

Before Grant could deliver his next threat, a low, heavy sound echoed down the gravel driveway outside.

A long, gleaming black Maybach—pristine, whisper-quiet, and carrying diplomatic-grade elegance—pulled smoothly to a stop right behind Grant’s battered sedan. A chauffeur in a dark uniform stepped out, opened the rear door, and extended an arm.

An elderly gentleman stepped out, leaning lightly on a silver-topped mahogany cane. He adjusted his charcoal wool overcoat and looked up at the carriage house with sharp, discerning eyes.

Grant turned around, peeking through the open doorway, and his entire face drained of color until he was ghost-white. ""L-Lawrence...?"" Grant stammered, his voice suddenly shrinking to a juvenile whimper. ""Mr. Caldwell?""

Lawrence Caldwell walked deliberately up the stone steps of the porch, not sparing a glance at Grant as he stepped inside. The room fell into absolute silence.

Lawrence looked at Claire, his severe expression instantly softening into profound warmth and respect. ""Good morning, my dear Claire. I apologize for interrupting your weekend, but your foundation team told me you had finalized the catalog for the new community arts initiative.""

Claire smiled warmly, the tension in her shoulders melting away. ""Good morning, Mr. Caldwell. We just finished the final drafts. And Grace was just waiting for her morning roll.""

Grant stood frozen, looking back and forth between his former idol and his ex-wife like a trapped animal. ""What... what is this?"" Grant sputtered, his voice cracking. ""Lawrence, you know her? How do you know her?""

Lawrence slowly turned his head, fixing Grant with a gaze so cold and piercing it seemed to drop the room's temperature by twenty degrees. ""I know Claire because I hired her eighteen months ago as the Chief Director of Cultural Philanthropy for the Caldwell Heritage Trust, Grant. She manages our fifty-million-dollar endowment for public education and the arts.""

""She... she works for you?"" Grant choked, his knees trembling. ""She was a nobody! She ruined me! Lawrence, you don't understand, she abandoned our marriage, she ran away—""

""Silence,"" Caldwell ordered, raising his cane an inch off the floor. The single word possessed the weight of an iron gavel.
