Chapter 3 - The Guardian at the Door

Claire woke in the maternity ward of Baylor University Medical Center, hooked up to an IV drip. The rhythmic, galloping thump of a fetal heart monitor filled the small room, sounding like sweet music to her bruised soul. The nurse confirmed that the baby was resilient and unharmed, though Claire’s blood pressure was dangerously erratic and severe exhaustion had taken a physical toll.

Standing in the corner of the room, looking awkwardly out of place amidst the medical machinery, was Daniel Brooks. He still wore his faded jeans and dark denim work shirt, holding a cardboard tray carrying two paper cups of herbal tea and a warm breakfast muffin.

""The nurses said you couldn't eat until the tests cleared, but they said herbal tea was fine,"" Daniel said softly, stepping forward with cautious respect. ""I stayed to make sure you had an emergency contact listed. You didn't write anyone down on the paperwork.""

Tears welled in Claire’s eyes as she looked at this man—a virtual stranger whose only connection to her was an iced tea order on humid afternoons. ""You didn't have to stay, Daniel. Your café...""

""My cousin is covering the register,"" he replied, pulling a visitor's chair closer. ""No one should have to open their eyes in a hospital room alone. Especially not when they're carrying new life.""

Claire broke down, the weeks of isolation and terror spilling out in silent, shaking sobs. She told Daniel the truth: not her husband's name, but that she had run from a suffocating, powerful marriage, that the man who owned the black car was the father of her child, and that he had looked straight into her eyes before abandoning her to the sidewalk. Daniel listened without judgment, his jaw clenching with quiet fury, offering only a steady presence and a clean handkerchief.

Their peaceful moment shattered two hours later when the door swung open without a knock. Marcus Vance stepped into the room, impeccably tailored, holding a leather folder. His eyes flickered over Daniel before locking onto Claire.

""Mrs. Whitaker,"" Marcus said smoothly. ""Mr. Whitaker has arranged for a private suite at Medical City and a round-the-clock nursing team. A private car is waiting downstairs. He asks that you vacate this public facility immediately to avoid unwanted publicity.""

Claire’s heart seized, but before she could speak, Daniel stood up, his broad frame completely blocking Marcus’s path to the bed. ""She isn't going anywhere with you,"" Daniel stated evenly.

Marcus frowned, his voice dropping into a corporate threat. ""You don't know who you're interfering with, friend. This is a family matter involving Whitaker Urban Holdings.""

""I don't care if it's the President of the United States,"" Daniel said, not yielding an inch. ""She's a patient under medical care, and you’re trespassing. Leave before I call hospital security and the Dallas police department to report corporate harassment on a high-risk maternity ward.""

Marcus hesitated, calculating the risk of a public disturbance, before snapping his folder shut. ""Mr. Whitaker will handle this legally, Claire,"" he warned, then turned and walked out.
