Chapter 6 - The Ghost of Highland Park

While Claire was building a life filled with peace, Grant Whitaker was drowning in the wreckage of his own arrogance.
The collapse of the River District bid triggered a catastrophic chain reaction. Whitaker Urban Holdings filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy within four months. Creditors foreclosed on the commercial office towers, the private jet leases were terminated, and the courts seized his assets to settle massive fraud and breach-of-contract penalties. The Highland Park mansion, once the crowning jewel of his social empire, was auctioned off on the courthouse steps for fifty cents on the dollar.
Grant fought tooth and nail through bitter legal battles, but his reputation was radioactive. Former associates refused to be seen in the same dining rooms with him. The Dallas elite, who had once groveled for invitations to his seasonal galas, now pretended not to recognize him when he passed them in hotel lobbies.
Reduced to a cramped, rented one-bedroom apartment in a noisy suburb of North Dallas, Grant spent his days obsessively drinking cheap whiskey and combing through old newspapers and digital court records. He refused to blame his own vanity, his reckless financial leverage, or his heartless abandonment of his wife. In his twisted mind, Claire was the sole architect of his ruin. If she hadn't run away, if she hadn't collapsed on that street corner in front of Lawrence Caldwell, none of this would have happened.
One evening, nearly two years after the collapse, a disgraced private investigator he had hired months earlier finally delivered an envelope. Inside were grainy surveillance photographs: Claire holding a laughing little girl in a small garden, and Claire walking hand-in-hand through an outdoor market with Daniel Brooks.

Grant stared at the images, his blood boiling with venomous resentment. His wife was living peacefully, smiling with an ordinary coffee shop owner, while he was scraping by on leftover scraps and ruined pride. He saw the child—his flesh and blood, a Whitaker heir—being raised around second-hand furniture and working-class simplicity.
""She took everything from me,"" Grant whispered into the empty, dim room, gripping his car keys. ""She's going to give it back.""
