Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm in Geneva

Six thousand miles away, high above the pristine, crystal-clear waters of Lake Geneva, the sun cast a golden blanket over the stone ramparts of the Vance ancestral estate.

I sat on a wide terrace surrounded by blooming white roses, wearing a comfortable cream cashmere cardigan, rocking my three-month-old baby boy against my chest. His name was Leo—named after my maternal grandfather, a man of quiet courage and unbreakable integrity.

Beside me sat Alistair Vance, the great-uncle I had never known until four months ago. He was sipping dark espresso from an antique porcelain cup, watching little Leo sleep with an expression of profound, tender reverence.

"He has your mother’s eyes, Claire," Uncle Alistair murmured, his rough, weathered voice softening into genuine affection. "Evelyn was the fiercest woman in our bloodline. When she left our family to marry an American schoolteacher, I was too proud and stubborn to chase after her. For thirty years, I lived with the regret of losing my sister."

He reached out, his calloused, ring-covered finger gently stroking baby Leo’s soft cheek. "When you reached out to my Zurich office four months ago with proof of your mother’s lineage and the evidence of Alexander’s treachery, I swore to God that no Vance woman would ever be neglected again."

"I was terrified, Uncle Alistair," I admitted, looking down at my son. "Alexander thought he was a king in Chicago. He had politicians in his pocket, judges on retainer, and a security apparatus that watched my every move."

Alistair let out a deep, gravelly chuckle that rumbled through his chest like distant thunder. "Alexander Moretti is an arrogant boy playing with inherited toys, Claire. He believes money equals power. He has no idea what true sovereign influence looks like."

He tapped a leather folder on the iron table between us. "Our forensic accounting teams have finished cataloging every single dollar Alexander spent while you were in labor."

My heart hardened as I looked at the documentation. While I was lying on the operating table undergoing an emergency cesarean section alone in Chicago, Alexander had charged a ninety-thousand-dollar diamond bracelet at Cartier in Cannes to their joint commercial account.

While I was learning how to nurse our son with bleeding stitches, Alexander was photographed on a rented yacht off the coast of Saint-Tropez, pouring vintage champagne down Sophia Reynolds’s throat.

"Is the legal blockade ready?" I asked, looking up at my great-uncle with cold, unwavering resolve.

"The snare is set, my dear," Alistair replied, his eyes flashing with lethal precision. "Alexander’s commercial bank in Chicago has seventy percent of its liquidity underwritten by my financial house. Tomorrow morning, we call the loan."
