Chapter 1 - The Name on the Dossier

The heavy mahogany desk in Alexander Moretti’s private penthouse office rattled as his security director set down the thick manila dossier. The room smelled of expensive leather, Cuban tobacco, and the suffocating tension of a man on the brink of an absolute nervous breakdown.

Alexander’s hands, normally so steady when signing multi-million-dollar acquisition contracts, shook violently as he turned open the top tab of the file. A single black-and-white photograph slipped out onto the blotter, showing an elderly gentleman with piercing silver eyes and an iron-gray beard stepping out of a private jet in Zurich.

"No... not him," Alexander rasped, his booming baritone cracking like brittle glass against the cold walls. "Tell me this is a sick joke, Briggs. Tell me my wife did not go to this man."

"It's not a joke, Mr. Moretti," Briggs replied, keeping his head respectfully bowed to avoid the furious panic in his employer's bloodshot eyes. "The private flight manifests from O’Hare, the encrypted offshore trust transfers, the armed tactical escort from Northwestern Memorial—all of them were authorized under the diplomatic seal of the Vance Sovereign Trust."

Alexander collapsed back into his Italian leather executive chair, feeling as if all the oxygen had been sucked out of the room. He stared at the name printed in bold black lettering at the top of the dossier: Lord Alistair Vance.

Alistair Vance was not merely a wealthy man; he was an apex financial predator who controlled European banking consortiums, sovereign shipping lanes, and private security networks across three continents. More dangerously, Alistair Vance was the ruthless patriarch who had crushed Alexander’s grandfather in the European market forty years ago, forcing the Moretti family to retreat to North America.

For two decades, Alexander had fought tooth and nail to secure a trade alliance with the Vance conglomerate, only to be dismissed as an arrogant upstart who didn't understand the sacred meaning of legacy.

"Why would Alistair Vance lift a single finger for Claire?" Alexander roared, slamming both fists onto the desk, sending crystal paperweights skidding across the wood. "Claire is a schoolteacher’s daughter from suburban Ohio! She has no connections! She has no money!"

"Sir, you never read Mrs. Moretti's sealed maternal estate records before your wedding," Briggs said quietly, his voice dropping into a cautious whisper. "Claire Bennett’s late mother was Evelyn Vance. She was Alistair Vance’s only estranged sister."

Alexander stopped breathing. The room seemed to tilt beneath him, the blood rushing into his ears with a deafening, terrifying roar.

"Claire isn't a suburban nobody, Mr. Moretti," Briggs continued, delivering the fatal blow without blinking. "Claire Bennett Moretti is the sole surviving heiress to the Vance European fortune. And Alistair Vance just welcomed his grand-niece and her newborn son into his high-security castle in the Swiss Alps."
