Chapter 6 - The Long Road of Humiliation

The collapse of Alexander Moretti’s world was swifter and more brutal than anyone in the financial markets could have anticipated. By Thursday morning, the Cook County court filings were leaked to every major publication in North America. Headlines screamed across Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal, and social media platforms: Billionaire Heir Abandons Pregnant Wife for Four-Month Mediterranean Trillionaire Tryst; Stripped of Family Fortune.

Photographs of Sophia Reynolds fleeing the luxury apartment were plastered across the internet, alongside damning text messages detailing Alexander's callous dismissals of his pregnant wife. The public backlash was immediate, ferocious, and devastating. Boycotts targeted Moretti luxury hotels; institutional investors pulled their capital from Moretti private equity funds; and by Friday noon, exactly as Julian Thorne had promised, the board of directors convened an emergency session.

Alexander walked into the boardroom looking like a ghost. He had not slept in four days; his designer suit was rumpled, his tie crooked, and his eyes bloodshot. But when he reached the head of the long mahogany table, his father Marcus was already sitting in his chair.

“Take a seat at the back, Alexander,” Marcus said, not even looking up from his briefing papers.

“Father, this is an orchestrated coup!” Alexander protested, his voice cracking with desperation. “Julian Thorne is using Claire to exact revenge for the Chicago rail contracts from eight years ago! Can’t you see she’s just his puppet?”

Marcus stood up slowly, walked over to his son, and placed a single document in his trembling hands. “Claire is nobody’s puppet. She never asked Julian Thorne for a single dime of his money. Julian offered his resources because he respected her father, but Claire used her own intellect to build the legal cage you are currently rotting in. You did this to yourself, Alexander. The board has voted unanimously. You are removed from all operational duties effective immediately.”

“You’re stripping me of everything?” Alexander whispered, tears blurring his vision. “I am your only son!”

“You are a disgrace to our family name,” Evelyn’s voice chimed in from the doorway. She walked forward, looking at her son with cold pity. “You threw away the most genuine, loving woman who ever walked into your life for cheap thrills and vanity. We have transferred the family trust into Leo’s name. Julian Thorne has been appointed co-executor alongside Claire. If you want a monthly stipend to keep a roof over your head, you will sign these surrender agreements and stay out of this company forever.”

Alexander looked down at the paperwork. His signature was required to relinquish all voting shares, executive privileges, and claims to marital property in exchange for a modest living trust.

He didn't sign it.

Instead, he threw the pen across the room, turned around, and walked out into the cold Chicago rain. He didn't care about the money anymore. He didn't care about the board, the company, or his father’s fortune. The emptiness in his chest was an agonizing, burning hole that no amount of wealth could fill. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the empty nursery, the lone silver rattle on the floor, and the image of his newborn son sleeping safely in another man’s home.

He realized with crushing clarity that he had traded the only real treasure he ever possessed for a handful of dirt. He vowed that no matter how long it took, no matter how low he had to sink, he would find me, get down on his knees in the dirt, and earn the right to look his son in the eyes.
