Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Untouchable Heir

The massive oak doors of the Moretti estate swung open, revealing an atmosphere thick with venom and mourning. Standing by the marble fireplace was his mother, Evelyn Moretti, her eyes red-rimmed and swollen from hours of uncontrolled sobbing. Behind a massive mahogany desk sat Marcus Moretti, the ruthless patriarch who had forged the family empire out of steel, sweat, and cutthroat intimidation.

“Where have you been, Alexander?” Marcus asked, his voice low, gravelly, and dangerously steady.

Alexander frowned, still clinging to his arrogant corporate armor. “I told you, Father. The European acquisitions ran longer than expected. I just landed an hour ago. Claire isn't home. Her phone is dead, her things are gone, and I want to know who let her walk out of that house.”

The words had barely left his lips when Evelyn let out a strangled shriek. “European acquisitions? You miserable, pathetic liar! Claire gave birth three weeks ago! Alone! In a hospital room without a single soul beside her because you were busy parading your cheap mistress around the French Riviera!”

Alexander froze, the blood draining completely from his face until he looked like a marble statue. “She... she gave birth? To the baby? No, her due date wasn't until—”

SLAP.

The sound cracked like a rifle shot across the cavernous study. Marcus had crossed the room with terrifying speed, his heavy palm striking Alexander across the face with enough force to turn his head and send his expensive glasses skittering across the parquet floor. Alexander stumbled back, clutching his burning cheek, completely paralyzed with shock. In thirty-two years, his father had never once laid a hand on him.

“You arrogant coward,” Marcus snarled, his voice vibrating with absolute disgust. “You dared to leave your pregnant wife, the future mother of my grandson, to play house with that social-climbing parasite Sophia Reynolds? Did you honestly believe your security detail answered only to you? Did you think nobody would notice the private jet manifests, the yacht leases in Monaco, the millions wired to offshore luxury accounts?”

With a flick of his wrist, Marcus snatched a thick white manila folder from the desk and slammed it squarely against Alexander’s chest. The impact caused the papers to burst open, scattering across the floor like falling snow.

Alexander dropped to his knees, his hands shaking violently as he picked up the first page. It was a formal petition for dissolution of marriage filed in the Cook County Circuit Court. Down at the bottom, inked with unwavering elegance, was my signature: Claire Bennett Moretti.

Attached beneath the filing were twenty pages of horrifyingly detailed evidence: screenshots of his late-night messages to Sophia, dates, times, hotel receipts, and the exact coordinates where he had sworn that his wife was merely a social obligation he would discard once the heir was secured.

“She knew,” Alexander whispered, the reality crashing down on him like an avalanche. “She knew before I even walked out the door.”

“She knew everything,” Evelyn wept, turning her back on him in sheer repulse. “She brought these to your father six weeks ago. She didn't cry. She didn't scream. She simply asked us if we would rather protect an unfaithful monster or respect the mother of our grandchild. She made us swear on our lives not to warn you, and God help me, Alexander, I wouldn't have warned you anyway.”

Alexander staggered back to his feet, clutching the divorce papers in a death grip. “She can’t do this! I am Alexander Moretti! Nobody takes my son away from me! Nobody walks away from this family without my permission! I’ll deploy every resource in this city. I will lock down the airports, freeze her accounts, destroy her friends, and bring her back on her knees!”

“Save your pathetic breath,” Marcus said coldly, retreating behind his desk with eyes that looked upon his only son as nothing more than a stranger. “You don't understand what you’ve stepped into, boy. Claire didn't run away into the woods. She didn't hide in a cheap motel. She was escorted out of the hospital under private military guard, and every dollar you thought you could freeze has already been moved beyond your reach. You broke your family, Alexander. And whoever is holding her hand right now has enough money to make sure you never see your son again.”
