Chapter 5 - The Masterpiece of Revenge

Alexander lunged out of his seat, pressing his hands against the flat screen as if he could reach through the glass and snatch the infant. “Where is she? Where is my son, Thorne? If you lay a single finger on that child, I will burn down every company you own!”

On the screen, Julian Thorne didn't even blink. He adjusted the cuff of his dark charcoal suit, picked up a fine china teacup, and took a measured sip before setting it down without making a sound. His silver-streaked hair and cold, gray eyes radiated the terrifying confidence of an apex predator looking at an injured deer.

“You haven't changed in eight years, Alexander,” Julian said in a calm, baritone voice that made the room feel suffocating. “Still shouting empty threats, still mistaking leverage for power, and still believing that human beings are assets you can park in a garage while you indulge your pathetic appetites.”

“That is my son!” Alexander screamed, his voice breaking with sheer hysteria. “He is a Moretti! He belongs in Chicago!”

“He was born at 3:14 AM on the twelfth of last month,” Julian replied quietly, glancing down at the sleeping baby with genuine warmth. “He weighed seven pounds, two ounces. His mother bled for four hours after delivery while your medical staff followed your orders to keep the pregnancy private. You weren't there to hold her hand. You were on a sundeck in Portofino, ordering vintage champagne for a woman who couldn't spell the word integrity if her life depended on it.”

The door behind Julian opened, and Alexander’s breath caught in his throat.

I walked into the frame.

I was wearing a cream-colored knit sweater, my long auburn hair falling over my shoulders in soft waves. The dark circles of exhaustion that had haunted me during the lonely months of my pregnancy were gone, replaced by a radiant, calm dignity Alexander had never seen in me before. I looked healthy, glowing, and completely untamed.

“Claire...” Alexander whimpered, tears suddenly welling in his eyes. “Claire, baby, please listen to me. I made a mistake. It was a stupid, meaningless fling. You know how stressful the acquisitions were! I was weak, I was foolish, but I love you! I swear to God on my life, I will sign anything. I will transfer half of Moretti Capital into your name today. Just bring our son home. Let me see my son!”

I didn't step closer to the camera. I stood by Julian’s chair, gently resting my fingertips on the rim of the wooden cradle. When I looked at the screen, my eyes didn't hold anger or hatred. They held something far worse: complete, absolute indifference.

“His name is Leo, Alexander,” I said, my voice steady and completely devoid of emotion. “And he is not a bargaining chip for your corporate prestige. You didn't want a family; you wanted an heir to prove your masculinity to your father and a trophy wife to manage your home while you lived like a bachelor.”

“Claire, please, don't do this to our marriage!” he pleaded, his knees actually buckling as he dropped onto the plush carpet before the screen. The mighty billionaire was begging like a condemned criminal. “We took vows! For better or for worse!”

“You violated those vows the second you booked two tickets to Europe while I was vomiting from morning sickness in our bathroom,” I replied softly. “I gave you four years of loyalty, Alexander. I gave you my youth, my peace of mind, and my quiet support while you built your empire on the back of my father’s original patents. You thought I was weak because I chose kindness. You thought I was stupid because I never challenged your arrogance.”

“I was wrong! I know I was wrong!” he sobbed openly now, completely unconcerned with any staff who might hear him through the doors.

“You were,” Julian intervened smoothly, taking a folder from his side table. “Which brings us to the business side of this call, Alexander. Your domestic credit facilities have been purchased by my private consortium over the last seventy-two hours. Your bank covenants require you to maintain family stability to secure the thirty-percent equity stake your board holds. When Claire’s divorce petition is unsealed tomorrow morning, complete with full documentation of your offshore abandonment, your board will trigger the character clause in your bylaws.”

Julian leaned forward, his cold eyes piercing straight through the lens. “By Friday afternoon, Alexander, you won't even be the CEO of your own father’s company. You will be an unemployed social pariah with thirty percent of his assets seized in marital escrow.”

“No... you can’t do that... my father won’t let you—”

May you like

“Your father was the one who signed over the voting proxies to Claire twenty minutes ago,” Julian stated, delivering the final, fatal execution. “He decided he would rather see his grandson raised under an honest roof than watch you run the Moretti legacy into the gutter. Goodbye, Alexander.”

The screen went black.
