Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs Shut

The boardroom erupted into immediate, deafening uproar as directors stood from their seats, shouting over one another.
"Is this true?!" shouted Councilman Davis, the board’s longest-serving independent director.
"You brought a corporate spy into our private executive sessions, Adriano?!"
Adriano turned slowly toward Bianca, his eyes wide with horror as he stared at the woman he had abandoned his family for.
"Bianca... tell me this is a fabrication," Adriano pleaded, his voice breaking under the weight of his shattered illusions.
Bianca grabbed her designer handbag, backing away from the table as security guards moved toward the perimeter doors.
"Don't look at me like that, Adriano," Bianca hissed, dropping all pretense of affection as a bitter sneer twisted her lips.
"Did you really think a forty-year-old billionaire with a pregnant wife was irresistible? You were desperate for validation, and Salvatore was willing to pay me five million to deliver your shipping routes."
"You used me," Adriano choked out, leaning heavily on the boardroom table to keep his knees from buckling.
"You used yourself, Adriano," Bianca laughed cruelly, turning toward the door.
"You were so terrified of growing old and boring with your quiet wife that you handed me the keys to your vault just to feel dangerous again."
Two private security officers intercepted Bianca at the threshold, placing their hands on their holsters.
"Miss Ricci, federal marshals and SEC compliance investigators are waiting for you in the lobby," Lucia said without looking up from her tablet.
"Industrial espionage and securities manipulation carry a mandatory minimum of fifteen years. Enjoy your afternoon."
Bianca’s face twisted into an ugly snarl as the guards escorted her through the glass doors, leaving the boardroom in stunned, suffocating silence.
Adriano collapsed back into his executive chair, his head hanging between his shoulders, utterly hollowed out.
The directors looked between the broken CEO and me, recognizing who truly held the reins of power.
"Gentlemen," I announced, resting my hand on the back of Marco Moretti's chair.
"My father built the Romano ports to serve thousands of honest, hardworking families across this state."
"I will not permit this company to collapse into bankruptcy because of one man's catastrophic midlife vanity."
"I am proposing an emergency restructuring: Marco Moretti will assume interim chief executive authority, the Vescari debt will be contested in chancery court, and the trust will provide full liquidity guarantees to protect employee payrolls."

The directors didn't even hesitate; every single hand around the table rose in unanimous approval.
Adriano sat in the corner of his own boardroom, stripped of his title, his mistress, and his pride, while his pregnant wife saved the empire he had tried to burn down.
