Chapter 1 - The Midnight Freeze

The grandfather clock in the downstairs gallery chimed three times, its deep gong echoing through the hollow rooms of the Moretti estate.

I sat by the window in the study, my swollen feet resting on an embroidered ottoman, clutching a mug of warm herbal tea.

Beneath my ribs, my daughter shifted restlessly, her tiny kicks gentle reminders that I no longer had the luxury of falling apart.

Lucia Bellandi stood near the antique hearth, her reading glasses perched low on her nose as her tablet illuminated the room with harsh blue light.

"The transmission to the central clearing banks completed at 2:13 A.M., Elena," Lucia said, her voice gravelly from exhaustion but completely steady.

"Every credit line collateralized by Port Aurelia and the northern shipping berths has been locked down under the Romano Continuity Trust's emergency clause."

I looked down at the photograph Lucia had laid across the mahogany desk.

Bianca Ricci was captured stepping into the backseat of Salvatore Vescari’s tinted Maybach, a leather portfolio tucked beneath her arm.

The time stamp confirmed the meeting took place six weeks ago, precisely when Adriano had started sleeping in the guest wing, claiming exhaustion from international financing meetings.

"He didn't just abandon me for her, Lucia," I whispered, tracing the forged Romano crest on the pledge document.

"He needed her to broker the private debt deal with Vescari so he could buy out the Mediterranean shipping routes before our anniversary."

"Adriano assumed you would never look inside your father’s locked cabinet," Lucia replied, crossing the Persian rug to place a reassuring hand on my shoulder.

"He thought you were just a grieving daughter who traded an inheritance for a comfortable mansion and a designer wardrobe."

"My father knew what Adriano was before I did," I said, remembering Vittorio Romano’s tired eyes during his final weeks in the clinic.

My father had recognized the cold, predatory hunger in Adriano Moretti’s ambition, even as I was busy daydreaming about happily ever after.

He had engineered the trust not to trap my husband, but to build an unbreachable wall around me when that ambition inevitably turned its teeth in my direction.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the foyer slammed open below, followed by hurried, uneven footsteps echoing across the marble.

Adriano had returned.

He wasn't singing or celebrating his grand public spectacle from the ballroom; his voice was raised in an angry, frantic roar directed at his executive assistant over the phone.

"What do you mean the liquidity transfer bounced?!" Adriano barked, his voice carrying up the sweeping curved staircase.

"The syndicated loan was approved yesterday afternoon! Fix it before the Tokyo exchange opens!"
