Chapter 3 - The Web of Deceit

Adriano stood frozen in the center of the study, the color draining from his face as my words echoed against the bookshelves.
"What did you just say about Bianca?" he stammered, his arrogant posture finally collapsing into raw confusion.
Lucia stepped forward, sliding a second set of printed photographs across the leather blotter.
"Your mistress has been on Salvatore Vescari’s payroll for nearly fourteen months, Mr. Moretti," Lucia stated with clinical detachment.
"She didn't return to you because she missed your charm. She returned because Vescari needed someone inside your inner circle to encourage your overleveraged expansion into the northern ports."
Adriano grabbed the surveillance photos, his hands trembling visibly as he examined the dates, times, and financial wire records.
Every dinner, every romantic rendezvous he thought he had kept secret was documented alongside corresponding stock short-positions taken by Vescari’s hedge fund.
Bianca had been feeding Vescari Adriano’s private ledger entries, allowing his greatest rival to corner the market and squeeze Moretti Capital into a corner.
"No... no, she wouldn't do this," Adriano muttered to himself, shaking his head in wild denial.
"She told me she left her husband because she never stopped loving me. She promised me we would build a dynasty together."
"You were so blinded by your own vanity that you couldn't see the trap, Adriano," I said, feeling no joy in his unraveling, only pity.
"You threw away ten years of marriage, an honorable reputation, and your unborn child for a woman who was actively selling your empire off piece by piece."
"Elena, please," Adriano gasped, taking an impulsive step toward me, reaching out with an open hand.
"I was stressed... the board was pressuring me... I wasn't thinking clearly."
"Do not step any closer to me," I commanded, my voice ringing with an authority that stopped him dead in his tracks.
"At eight o'clock tonight, you looked four hundred of our peers in the eye and said our marriage was a soulless arrangement."
"You announced you were discarding me like an old lease while I carried your daughter."
"Now you want to talk about stress?"
Adriano sank into the nearest leather armchair, burying his face in his hands as the full reality of his ruin crashed down upon his shoulders.
"If the trust doesn't release the collateral, the creditors will seize the headquarters by the end of the week," he whispered into his palms.

"The headquarters can be rebuilt," I told him, walking toward the door of the study.
"What cannot be rebuilt is my trust in you. You have two hours to pack your clothes and leave this house."
