Chapter 8 - The Hammer of Justice

Federal agents in windbreakers marked "FBI" poured through the open gate, their weapons drawn. Nicholas calmly stood up, dusted off his slacks, and raised his hands slightly, stepping back to let the authorities handle the situation. Detective Reynolds, the lead investigator who had taken Victoria Vance’s initial report, marched directly toward the groveling Daniel.

"Daniel Sullivan, you are under arrest for felony domestic endangerment, attempted assault with a deadly weapon, violation of a restraining order, and federal wire fraud," Reynolds announced, pulling Daniel’s hands behind his back and clicking the steel handcuffs into place with a sharp, satisfying snap.

Daniel struggled against the cold concrete, spitting dirt and blood. "Do you know who my family is? My lawyer will have your badge by lunch! Ava, tell them! Tell them this is a misunderstanding!"

I stepped down the porch stairs, standing right beside Nicholas. I looked down at the man I had once thought was my protector, the man whose ring I had worn with foolish devotion. There was no pity left in my heart. There was only the cold clarity of a mother who had defended her child.

"I have nothing to say to you, Daniel," I said calmly. "Except that Lily will never know your name, and she will never bear your shame. Goodbye."

The agents hauled Daniel to his feet. He thrashed and cursed as they shoved him into the back of a squad car, the door slamming shut on his screams. Across town, simultaneous federal raids were already taking place at the Sullivan Foundation headquarters and Eleanor Sullivan’s penthouse. Forensic accountants had uncovered decades of falsified charitable filings, offshore tax evasion, and the buried safety inspections related to the building collapse that had claimed Nicholas's sister.

An hour later, the street fell quiet again. Inside the warm brownstone, Victoria Vance put down her phone and turned to Nicholas and me with a look of absolute, unassailable victory.

"The federal judge signed the emergency receivership order," Victoria said, raising her coffee mug in a silent toast. "Daniel’s bail has been denied due to flight risk and violent conduct. Eleanor Sullivan is currently being booked at the federal detention center. And by virtue of Arthur Sullivan's original testamentary trust, Ava, you have officially been appointed as the legal trustee and managing director of the Sullivan Group, holding eighty-five percent of the voting shares until Lily reaches her twenty-first birthday."

I sank into the armchair by the fire, overwhelmed by the sudden tidal wave of relief. In less than a week, I had gone from shivering on a frozen sidewalk with an empty bank account to controlling one of the most prominent real estate and investment portfolios in the country.

Nicholas walked over and poured two glasses of sparkling cider, handing one to me. "To justice," he said softly.

"To justice," I replied, clinking my glass against his. "And to truth."

I looked up at him, studying the subtle lines around his eyes. "You waited twelve years for this day, Nicholas. You tore down their empire."

"No, Ava," Nicholas said, his gaze softening in a way I had never seen before. "Daniel tore down his own empire with his greed and cruelty. I merely handed you the hammer to finish the job."
