Chapter 1 - The Midnight Sanctuary

The heavy oak door of the Marlowe’s presidential suite clicked shut, leaving me standing in a room larger than the entire home I grew up in. The warmth of the radiant heating seeped through my damp sneakers, but my heart was racing at a dangerous speed. Nicholas Maro’s words through the cracked doorway still echoed in my ears: "Do not touch Daniel." Why would a ruthless titan who practically owned the city’s underground and half its skyline care about preserving Daniel Sullivan? Was this an alliance I had unwittingly stumbled into? Or was Daniel indebted to this shadowy syndicate, making my daughter and me mere leverage in a game far beyond my understanding?

I walked over to the mahogany crib sitting near the panoramic glass window. Inside lay Lily, bundled in soft organic cotton that felt like spun silk compared to the scratchy hospital swaddle she had arrived in. Her tiny chest rose and fell in peaceful rhythm, completely unaware that her father had disowned her purely for possessing two X chromosomes. A nurse in crisp navy scrubs, introduced earlier only as Elena, stood quietly in the corner, discreetly monitoring Lily’s vitals with high-end pediatric equipment.

"Her oxygen levels are perfect, Mrs. Sullivan," Elena said softly, offering a reassuring smile that carried no judgment. "And her core temperature has stabilized. She is a strong baby."

"Thank you," I whispered, my voice cracked and hoarse. "Please, just Ava. Sullivan isn't a name I care to keep."

Elena bowed respectfully and packed her kit, leaving me alone with my baby. I sank onto the edge of the king-sized bed, burying my face in my hands. The past seventy-two hours felt like a surreal nightmare. One day I was a woman believing she was building a domestic dream with a charming real estate heir, and the next I was sitting on a frost-covered concrete curb, clutching a newborn while Daniel’s lawyers froze my debit cards before the postpartum bleeding had even stopped. Daniel's mother, Eleanor Sullivan, had made it abundantly clear during my third trimester that Sullivan bloodlines required an alpha male to inherit the family foundation. But I never truly believed Daniel would look at his own flesh and blood with such utter revulsion.

A soft knock at the suite door startled me. My muscles tensed, instinct telling me to flee, but I had nowhere to run. When the door opened, Nicholas walked in alone. He had shed his suit jacket, wearing only a tailored charcoal vest and an immaculate white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. A dark, ornate tattoo peeked from beneath his left cuff—an intricate crest wrapping around his wrist.

"The pediatric team will check on her every six hours," Nicholas said, his voice deep, gravelly, and composed. He set a leather briefcase onto the glass dining table. "And before you ask, no, you are not a prisoner here. You are a guest. You can leave whenever you wish, Ava. But out there, Daniel has already filed an emergency ex-parte motion claiming you suffered postpartum psychosis and abandoned your marital residence with his child."

The room spun. "What?" I gasped, clutching my throat. "He threw us out! He changed the locks on our brownstone and cancelled my emergency credit card!"

"Daniel Sullivan is many things, but above all, he is a coward who protects his public vanity," Nicholas replied coolly, pulling out a chair and gesturing for me to sit. "He realizes that throwing a woman and an infant into a blizzard looks terrible on the front page of the Wall Street Journal. If he claims you are mentally unstable, he gets full legal custody of Lily to save face, hands her off to a private orphanage or a distant boarding home, and files for an uncontested divorce citing spousal fault. You walk away with zero dollars, zero rights, and a criminal record."

Tears of rage burned my eyes. "I will die before he touches her again. I will sleep on the subway before I let him take her."

"You won't have to do either," Nicholas murmured, opening the briefcase to reveal stacks of legal filings. "I told my men not to touch Daniel because broken bones heal too quickly, Ava. Daniel Sullivan doesn't deserve a quick beating in an alleyway. He deserves total, legal, and financial ruin. And you are going to be the one who brings him to his knees."
