Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

The morning after the gala, the story exploded across every media outlet in the country. The New York Post ran a front-page photo of Daniel pinned against the pillar with the headline: "THE COLD HEIR: SULLIVAN EXPOSES CORRUPTION AFTER CASTING OUT INFANT DAUGHTER." Television networks broadcast the surveillance footage of Daniel walking out on me at Manhattan General. Public outrage was immediate and ferocious. Sponsors began pulling funding from the Sullivan Foundation within hours, and the board of directors scheduled an emergency vote of no confidence.
Back at the Gramercy brownstone, Victoria Vance had turned the dining table into a war room. Nicholas sat at the head of the table, reviewing thick stacks of forensic accounting reports that had arrived overnight.
"Nicholas wasn't bluffing at the gala," Victoria explained, handing me a highlighted dossier. "For the past three years, Daniel has been using a shell company named 'Aegis Holdings' to siphon funds out of the Sullivan family trust. He wasn't just hiding money from you in anticipation of a divorce; he was covering up nearly forty million dollars in sports betting losses to an offshore syndicate."
"Forty million?" I asked, completely stunned. "He told me we were living on a tight corporate budget when Lily was on the way. He refused to pay for a private nursery room in our building!"
"Because he was drowning in debt," Nicholas said, looking up from the documents. "His father Arthur set up the family trust with strict moral and performance clauses. If Daniel failed to produce a male heir by his thirtieth birthday, or if he was implicated in gross financial misconduct, seventy percent of the voting shares and trust dividends automatically revert to his lawful spouse and surviving children."
I stared at Nicholas in disbelief. "What did you say?"
"Arthur Sullivan was a criminal, but he wasn't completely blind to his son’s incompetence," Nicholas explained, his gaze locking onto mine. "Arthur wrote those bylaws ten years ago to prevent Daniel from squandering the entire estate. Daniel knew that if you had a daughter, he wouldn't inherit the controlling interest. But if he divorced you before Lily's birth was formally registered with the family trust, or if he forced you to abandon custody, the clauses would be voided, giving him another two years to produce an heir."
The horrific puzzle pieces finally snapped together. Daniel hadn't just abandoned Lily out of archaic family pride; it was a desperate, calculated maneuver to keep his hands on an empire he was actively destroying.
"So Lily isn't just his daughter," I realized, my voice trembling with revelation. "She is the sole legal beneficiary of the entire Sullivan trust."
"Exactly," Victoria said with a triumphant smile. "Under the terms of Arthur’s will, because Daniel attempted to fraudulently disinherit an infant child and committed felony abandonment, we have grounds to petition for immediate receivership. You, as Lily’s sole legal guardian, can take control of the Sullivan family board."

Before I could process the magnitude of what she was saying, the sound of screeching tires echoed from the street outside the brownstone. Security monitors on the wall flashed bright red as an alarm began to sound.
Nicholas stood up instantly, pulling a sleek handgun from his shoulder holster with calm, lethal efficiency. On the surveillance screen, Daniel Sullivan was outside the front gate, wielding a heavy metal tire iron, completely unhinged and screaming my name at the top of his lungs.
