Chapter 8 - The Price of Blood

The gun battle lasted less than three minutes, but to Hannah, huddled in the darkness behind the heavy front door, it felt like an eternity in purgatory.

Caleb’s tactical team, trained for high-intensity counter-ambush operations, flanked the treeline from both sides. Suppressed gunfire crackled through the pines, followed by shouts in Spanish and English, the sound of breaking branches, and finally, the eerie, heavy silence of an ended fight.

""Clear! Perimeter secure! Threat neutralized!""

Hannah threw the deadbolt back with trembling hands and ripped the door open.

The driveway was a scene of devastation. Smoke hung heavy in the damp pine air. Two black SUVs had their windows blown out, steam hissing from punctured radiators. In the treeline, security guards were zip-tying two wounded assailants while two other bodies lay motionless on the wet needles.

In the center of the driveway, Caleb lay on his back in the mud.

Dean Rourke—who had arrived in the second SUV—was kneeling beside him, pressing a military trauma dressing against Caleb’s right shoulder and chest. Blood was soaking through Dean’s fingers, dark and heavy in the rain.

""Pressure! Keep pressure on it!"" Dean barked into a radio. ""Get the medevac chopper airborne from Bangor! We have a penetrating thoracic wound, possible hemothorax!""

Hannah dropped to her knees beside Caleb in the mud, heedless of the blood, heedless of the cold.

""Caleb,"" she sobbed, pressing her hands over Dean’s, adding her weight to the dressing. ""Caleb, look at me! Look at me!""

Caleb’s eyelids fluttered open. His face was gray, his breathing shallow and rattling, but when his gaze found Hannah, a faint, bloody smile touched his lips.

""The... the baby..."" he whispered, his voice barely audible over the wind. ""Noah... is he...""

""He’s safe. He’s inside with Evelyn. He doesn't have a scratch on him,"" Hannah wept, tears streaming down her cheeks, washing away the dirt on his cheekbones. ""You idiot. You stupid, stubborn idiot. Why did you do that?""

""Had to..."" Caleb coughed, a speck of blood bubbling at the corner of his mouth. ""Had to make sure... you knew.""

""Knew what?""

""You weren't an asset,"" Caleb whispered, his fingers weakly curling around Hannah’s wrist, gripping with the last ounce of his fading strength. ""You were never an asset, Hannah. You were... my life. I gave it away... but I took it back.""

His eyes rolled back. His grip on her wrist went limp.

""Caleb! Caleb!"" Hannah screamed, shaking him.

""Pulse is thready!"" Dean yelled, ripping open an emergency airway kit. ""Hannah, move back! Let the medics work!""

Hannah was pulled back by two security guards as the trauma team swarmed Caleb’s body. They inserted an IV, taped a chest seal over the exit wound, and loaded him onto a tactical backboard.

Through the chaos, Hannah stood in the pouring rain, watching the man she had hated for three years fight for every breath on a stretcher.

Beside her, Evelyn walked out onto the porch, carrying Noah wrapped in a warm blanket. Noah looked at the flashing red lights, then at his mother covered in blood and mud.

""Mama,"" Noah asked quietly, pointing a tiny finger at the stretcher being loaded into an ambulance that had just navigated the driveway. ""Is the brave man going to sleep?""

Hannah swallowed the lump of glass in her throat, knelt down, and pulled her son against her heart.

""No, baby,"" she whispered, her voice cracking with an emotion she hadn't allowed herself to feel in three years. ""He’s fighting to wake up.""
