Chapter 7 - The Ambush

""Sniper!"" a security guard shouted from the rear SUV.

Before Hannah could even register the sound, Caleb moved.

He didn't hesitate. He didn't calculate. He didn't look around for assets, ledgers, or leverage.

With a speed that defied human reaction, Caleb lunged across the gravel. His broad body collided with Hannah and Noah, knocking them backward beneath the overhanging shelter of the reinforced porch just as a second high-caliber round tore through the driver-side window of Hannah’s car, showering the driveway in shattered safety glass.

Caleb covered both of them with his own body, pressing Hannah and Noah against the timber siding of the house. His arms formed an impenetrable cage over their heads, his broad back exposed to the darkness of the woods.

""Get inside! Evelyn, open the cellar!"" Caleb roared, his voice cutting through the gunfire erupting from the treeline.

Hannah’s private security details—men Caleb had positioned along the perimeter—returned fire with suppressed carbines. Muzzle flashes lit up the dark pine forest in strobe-like bursts.

Noah screamed, terror finally piercing his toddler innocence as the deafening cracks of gunfire reverberated off the carriage house walls.

""Look at me, Noah!"" Caleb said, turning his head down toward his son. His voice, which had been broken seconds before, was suddenly rock-steady, filled with an absolute, unshakable authority. ""Look at my eyes, buddy. You’re safe. I’ve got you. Nobody touches you while I’m breathing.""

Noah stared into Caleb’s hazel eyes, transfixed. The boy’s crying slowed into rapid, terrified gasps as he clung to Hannah’s neck.

""Hannah, the front door is reinforced oak, but the windows aren't bullet-resistant,"" Caleb said, his face inches from hers. His eyes were clear, focused, entirely devoid of the cold corporate calculation she had hated. ""Take Noah into the fruit cellar beneath the kitchen. The foundation is fieldstone. It will stop any caliber they have.""

""What about you?"" Hannah gasped, her hands instinctively grabbing his wet shirt. The terror of the moment stripped away three years of hatred, leaving only raw, primal instinct. ""Caleb, there are at least four shooters in the trees!""

""I am drawing their fire away from the house,"" he said simply.

""No! That’s suicide!""

Caleb looked at her, his expression softening into the smile he had once given her in private—the smile that belonged only to her.

""Three years ago, I ran toward a portfolio because I thought I was protecting our future,"" Caleb whispered, his hand gently cupping her jaw for a single, fleeting second. ""I was a fool, Hannah. The only future that ever mattered was in your arms. I’m not running away this time.""

Before she could scream, Caleb shoved them through the heavy oak front door, slammed it shut from the outside, and engaged the heavy deadbolt.

Hannah heard him shout orders to his men outside.

""Concentrate fire on the eastern ridge! Suppress the sniper! Bring the lead SUV to the front porch!""

Through the small peep-window in the heavy door, Hannah watched in horror as Caleb Rourke deliberately stepped off the porch into the open gravel, firing a sidearm toward the treeline, drawing every ounce of enemy fire directly toward himself.

A muzzle flash bloomed from the darkness.

Caleb spun. A red blossom exploded across the right side of his chest.

He stumbled against the hood of the SUV, his weapon dropping to the gravel, but he didn't go down. He raised his left hand, signaling his security team to advance into the flanking tree line.

""Caleb!"" Hannah shrieked, banging her fists against the heavy wood.
