Chapter 6 - Face to Face

""Get off my property, Caleb,"" Hannah said, her voice shaking with rage. She stepped down from the porch, putting herself squarely between Caleb and the car where Noah sat inside. ""You have no legal right to be here. You bring your mercenaries to my home in the middle of the night—""

""They aren't here for you,"" Caleb said, taking another slow, careful step forward. He kept his eyes locked on hers, pleading with an intensity that terrified her. ""They’re here to protect this perimeter. Because Silas Vane didn't die in prison, Hannah. His brother, Julian Vane, broke him out during a transport transfer four months ago. Silas has been hunting my assets. He found the Boston paper trail three days before I did.""

Hannah stopped. The cold rain seemed to freeze against her skin. ""What?""

""Silas Vane wants revenge,"" Caleb continued, his voice tight with an ancient, unbearable pain. ""He spent three years in federal maximum security because of those ledgers. He knows I spent every waking hour and fifty million dollars looking for you. He realized the only way to destroy me was to find what I was looking for before I did.""

""You led them to us,"" Hannah whispered, horror dawning in her eyes. ""You came here and brought them to my son!""

""No,"" Caleb said fiercely. ""I caught Silas’s surveillance team outside your gallery two days ago. My men intercepted them before they could transmit your coordinates. I didn't come here to drag you back to Miami, Hannah. I came here because this is the only safe house on the eastern seaboard they haven't compromised. I brought the war to my own front door to keep it away from yours.""

Before Hannah could respond, the rear door of her car clicked open.

""Mama?""

Noah tumbled out of the backseat, clutching his stuffed bear, his little boots splashing into the gravel. He didn't understand the tension. He only saw his mother standing in the rain with a tall, unfamiliar man who looked strangely like the pictures Hannah kept hidden in the locked cedar chest under her bed.

Caleb froze.

Every muscle in his body locked. His breath hitched in his chest, a ragged, strangled sound that tore out of him as his gaze fell upon the little boy standing by the rear bumper.

Noah had his eyes. His exact brow. The same curious, fearless tilt of the head.

Caleb slowly sank to his knees in the wet gravel and mud, heedless of his tailored trousers, heedless of the freezing rain soaking through his clothes. For a man who had commanded boardrooms of hundreds and commanded an empire worth billions, he looked completely shattered, reduced to dust.

""My boy,"" Caleb choked out, tears finally breaking through his iron discipline, cutting hot tracks down his rain-streaked face. ""Hannah... he’s...""

Noah tilted his head, watching the crying stranger with genuine toddler curiosity. He took two hesitant steps forward.

""Noah, stay back,"" Hannah commanded, her maternal instinct flaring like wildfire.

Noah paused, looking at his mother, then back at Caleb. ""Why is the man on the ground, Mama? Did he fall like me?""

Caleb covered his face with his trembling hands, his shoulders shaking with silent, wracking sobs. The ruthless king of Miami was weeping in the dirt of a Maine driveway, unable to lift his head under the sheer weight of what he had lost—and what he had almost destroyed.

Hannah watched him. For three years, she had dreamed of this moment. She had dreamed of seeing Caleb Rourke humbled, punished, made to feel the agonizing loneliness that had consumed her on that bloody floor in Florida.

Yet, looking at him now, broken and sobbing in the mud, she felt no triumph. Only a deep, hollow ache for the family that had died before it had even begun.

Suddenly, a sharp crack echoed from the treeline bordering the driveway.

A bullet struck the hood of Hannah’s car, sending a shower of sparks into the dark.
