Chapter 5 - The Appraisal of Glass

Richard took a furious step forward, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth audibly ground together.
"What is the meaning of this charade, Serena?" Richard hissed, trying to keep his voice low, though his eyes burned with humiliated rage. "Where did you get that fake piece?"
"Fake?"
The man standing beside Julian Sterling stepped forward, adjusting his gold-rimmed spectacles. It was Dr. Alistair Finch, the preeminent gemological authority in the United States and the senior director of the Smithsonian's historic archives.
"Mr. Sterling," Dr. Finch said, his voice echoing crisply in the quiet ballroom. "I personally inspected, authenticated, and certified the Tears of the Ocean in this young lady's possession at three o'clock this afternoon. This piece has remained in the Sterling family trust since 1912."
Dr. Finch turned his gaze toward Chloe Davenport, peering at her neck with clinical, unsparing scrutiny.
Chloe shrank back, her cheeks burning bright pink as hundreds of guests leaned in to hear the verdict.
"The piece around that young lady's throat," Dr. Finch continued, a faint scoff in his tone, "is the 1974 theatrical exhibition replica, constructed of molded barium crystal and synthetic blue spinel. It was auctioned off in an estate sale in Zurich thirty years ago for less than twelve hundred dollars."
A chorus of stifled giggles and shocked murmurs erupted among the socialites.
Chloe gasped, tearing the necklace from her neck with shaking hands, staring at the blue stones as if they had suddenly turned to hot coals in her palm.
"Twelve hundred dollars?!" Chloe shrieked, losing all composure, turning to glare at Richard with wild, furious eyes. "You told me this was an eight-million-dollar masterpiece! You told me you bought it from an elite gallery in Geneva!"
"Shut up, Chloe!" Richard snapped through his teeth, his face turning an apocalyptic shade of purple.
"You lied to me!" she yelled, tears streaming down her carefully painted cheeks, her voice cracking in front of Manhattan's elite. "You gave me cheap costume jewelry and told me I was outshining his wife!"
"I paid eight million dollars for that piece!" Richard roared, losing his temper completely in the middle of the gala.
Serena stepped closer, her blue eyes colder than the winter outside.
"Yes, Richard," Serena said softly. "You did pay eight million dollars. You wired it on Tuesday morning from the primary operational treasury of Sentinel Data."
The two Morgan Stanley bankers standing behind Richard instantly backed away, their faces turning completely pale.
"Embezzlement from an active registration entity," Arthur, the banker, muttered in horror, pulling out his smartphone to dial his compliance office.
"Serena, you don't know what you're talking about!" Richard stammered, stepping toward his wife with an outstretched, pleading hand. "That was a bridge loan! It was an authorized advance against my executive stock options!"

Julian Sterling stepped between them, holding out a certified blue-backed legal docket.
"Your executive stock options were revoked at five o'clock this evening, Richard," Julian announced with absolute legal finality.
