Chapter 3 - The Gathering of Vultures

The night of the Crescent Moon Ball arrived with an icy autumn breeze sweeping across Fifth Avenue.

The grand facade of the Metropolitan Museum was illuminated by hundreds of golden floodlights. Limousines and armored sedans stretched for four blocks, dropping off ambassadors, tech titans, old-money dynasties, and international celebrities.

Inside the Great Hall, two thousand guests mingled beneath soaring stone arches draped in ivory silk and silver wisteria.

A forty-piece orchestra played a delicate, sweeping waltz from the balcony. Diamond jewelry, vintage champagne, and whispered gossip flowed through the crowd like expensive wine.

Near the grand staircase, Richard Sterling stood holding a flute of Dom Pérignon, surrounded by three venture capitalists and two major investment bankers from Morgan Stanley.

He wore an immaculate Tom Ford tuxedo with diamond cuff links, radiating the arrogant confidence of a man about to become a paper multi-billionaire on Monday morning.

"The initial roadshow numbers look extraordinary, Richard," one banker smiled, clinking his glass. "Sentinel Data is expected to open at eighty-four dollars a share. You're looking at a market cap north of thirty billion."

Richard grinned, basking in the adulation. "When you control the enterprise security infrastructure of forty percent of Fortune 500 companies, capital flows naturally, Arthur."

A soft rustle of silk sounded behind him.

Chloe Davenport stepped up to his side, sliding her slender, manicured arm through his.

She wore a backless, shimmering liquid-gold gown that clung to every curve, slit to mid-thigh. Her dark hair was styled into an intricate, modern updo, designed specifically to showcase the heavy blue necklace resting against her collarbone.

The imitation Tears of the Ocean glittered under the chandeliers, looking dazzling to the untrained eye.

Several nearby socialites turned their heads, their eyebrows rising at the blatant display. Whispers spread through the inner circle like wildfire.

"Richard, darling," Chloe purred loudly enough for the bankers to hear. "The lighting in this hall is simply magnificent. Doesn't the necklace catch the light perfectly?"

Richard looked down at her with smug satisfaction, kissing her cheek openly in front of his prospective IPO underwriters.

"It suits you, Chloe," Richard said smoothly. "True elegance belongs on a woman who knows how to shine, not on someone who hides in the shadows of antique libraries."

Arthur, the senior banker, glanced nervously at the necklace, then looked around the crowded ballroom with an uncomfortable expression.

"Uh, Richard... isn't that piece from the Sterling family heritage vault?" Arthur asked under his breath. "I thought the Tears of the Ocean was protected by your wife's ancestral trust."

Richard chuckled dismissively, waving his hand. "My wife has no appreciation for historical jewelry. It was gathering dust in a vault. I decided it was time to bring it into the modern world."

Chloe beamed, thrusting her chest forward so the oversized stones caught the flash of a society photographer's camera.

She believed she had won the ultimate prize. She believed she was about to replace Serena Sterling as the reigning queen of Manhattan society.

Then, the orchestra suddenly ceased playing in mid-measure.
