Chapter 4 - The Eclipse in Royal Blue

The grand entrance archway at the top of the marble stairs fell into complete, breathless silence.

Two private security guards in formal dress uniforms opened the gilded bronze doors.

Serena Sterling walked into the grand ballroom.

She did not wear the quiet cashmere or the understated charcoal suits Richard had constantly criticized as 'severe.'

She wore a custom, breathtaking midnight-blue velvet gown designed by an elite Parisian couture house. The gown was sculptured to perfection, sweeping the marble floor with an elegant, dramatic train. Her golden hair was pinned in a timeless chignon, framing her pristine, luminous skin.

And resting against her throat was the authentic Tears of the Ocean.

The genuine Burmese sapphires did not merely reflect the chandelier light; they seemed to consume it, radiating a deep, velvet, hypnotic blue that made the breath catch in every throat in the room.

Walking beside her, dressed in a sharp, four-star tuxedo, was Julian Sterling, accompanied by the legendary chief curator of the Smithsonian's National Gemological Collection.

A collective, audible gasp echoed across the two thousand guests.

Glasses stopped in mid-air. Conversations died instantly.

Every single pair of eyes in the hall moved from Serena’s neck... to Chloe Davenport’s liquid-gold chest... and back to Serena.

Chloe’s triumphant smile froze. Her hand instinctively flew up to touch her necklace, her eyes widening in frantic confusion.

"Richard..." Chloe whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "Why is she wearing the same necklace?"

Richard stood frozen on the marble floor. His champagne glass tilted in his hand, spilling pale golden liquid over his polished leather shoes.

His face turned an ugly, mottled shade of crimson. "That's impossible. She can't... she doesn't have access to the vault."

Serena descended the grand marble staircase with slow, regal grace. She did not hurry. She did not look around nervously. She carried herself with the untouchable authority of a woman who had owned the room before any of them were born.

As she reached the bottom step, the society matrons parted instantly, whispering behind their diamond-encrusted fans.

"My God, look at the depth of those stones," whispered Beatrice Kensington’s mother, a woman whose family had funded the opera house. "That is the true Sterling sapphire."

"Then what on earth is that young woman by Richard wearing?" another voice asked with biting amusement.

Serena stopped ten feet from Richard and Chloe.

She looked at her husband of twelve years with a serene, unreadable expression, completely ignoring the young woman in gold who was trembling beside him.

"Good evening, Richard," Serena said, her voice clear, melodic, and perfectly pitched to carry across the silent floor. "I took your advice. I decided to wear something brighter tonight."
