Chapter 8 - The Fall of an Empire

The sudden arrival of federal agents through the perimeter exits ended any possibility of escape for Vance and Marisa. Blue and red flashing lights flooded through the high warehouse windows, casting long, dramatic shadows across the concrete floor. Badges were flashed, weapons were lowered, and federal agents moved in with handcuffs, securing the black briefcase and the parure intact.
Marisa was read her rights right there on the wet warehouse concrete. As an agent guided her toward the awaiting squad car, she cast a look of pure hatred at Julia. Julia didn't flinch. She stood beside her sister Maya, watching the spectacle with the detached precision of an accountant closing an unbalanced ledger.
Dante walked slowly across the expanse of the warehouse toward Julia. The billionaire who had never apologized to anyone in his entire life looked hollowed out, as if twenty years of arrogance had been stripped away in a single morning.
""Julia,"" he whispered, his hands trembling slightly at his sides. ""I... I checked the system logs. Sal told me about the administrative override. I didn't know.""
""You didn't want to know,"" Julia replied, her tone level and completely devoid of warmth. ""It was easier to search my purse than to question your own blood. It was easier to treat me like a common thief than to admit that your beloved family was rotting from the inside out.""
""I was protecting the family name,"" Dante stammered, reaching out a hand, though he didn't dare touch her. ""Please, Julia. Come home. We can fix this. I'll make a public statement. I'll make the foundation yours—entirely yours.""

Julia looked down at his outstretched hand, then back up into the eyes of the man she had loved for three years. ""You broke Clause Nine, Dante. You didn't just doubt me; you stripped away my dignity in front of your staff. That ring on the console table stays right where it is.""
She turned on her heel and walked away into the arms of her sister, leaving Dante Caruso standing alone amidst the flashing sirens of his unraveling world.
