Chapter 2 - The Forty-Eight Hour Clock

Standing under the neon glow of a late-night diner six miles from the estate, Julia tossed her drenched trench coat over the booth. The diner smelled of burnt coffee and fried hash browns, a far cry from the cedarwood and polished marble of the Caruso compound. She plugged a burner phone into a portable battery pack, watching the screen flicker to life. The countdown was ticking. She had exactly forty-eight hours until the foundation's quarterly board meeting on Saturday morning, where Marisa was slated to transfer fifty million dollars into an offshore trust.

She reached for the encrypted flash drive nestled safely inside the lining of her leather boot—the only item she had truly carried out of the house. For fourteen months, Julia had noticed discrepancies in the Caruso Foundation books. Millions of dollars earmarked for public charities had quietly slipped into shell corporations operating out of Delaware and Zurich. Every time Julia brought the irregularities up, Dante dismissed them as routine tax optimization overseen by Marisa. But Julia had spent five years working forensic accounting on Wall Street before she ever met Dante Caruso. She knew embezzlement when she saw it.

Her burner phone chimed with a message from an unlisted number. It was Kenny Platt, the young technician whose name had vanished from the vault’s digital roster. The text contained a single line: ""The backup drives are at the secondary server room near the docks. I can't stay in town."" Kenny had realized he was being set up as the fall guy for the security breach and fled the city hours earlier, leaving Julia as his only lifeline.

Julia opened her battered notebook and stared at the red circle she had drawn around a name: Nicholas Vance. Vance was not a jeweler or a diamond broker. He was the owner of Vance Maritime, a private freight company holding exclusive contracts with Marisa Caruso’s luxury import business. The diamonds had never been meant for a black-market pawnshop. They were collateral for a shipment of illicit antiquities arriving under the radar at dawn. To bring the truth to light, Julia did not just need to clear her name—she needed to intercept the entire exchange before Dante’s men silenced her for good.
