Chapter 4 - The Silent Partner

Dawn broke over the industrial district along the Hudson River in dreary shades of charcoal and slate. Julia and Maya parked behind an abandoned warehouse overlooking Pier 42. Armed with a long-range camera and a laptop, they tapped into the regional port authority’s logistics manifest. Every shipping container clearing customs had a digital barcode, and Julia had discovered that Marisa’s import business had a container marked as high-end Italian porcelain scheduled for clearance at noon.
Julia knew that diamond theft was too small a motive for someone of Marisa Caruso’s wealth. Marisa was not stealing jewels to buy dresses; she was liquidating family assets to settle a catastrophic debt. Three years ago, when the historic Caruso warehouse burned down in what was officially ruled an electrical accident, millions of dollars in uninsured client art had been destroyed. Dante had covered the initial losses out of the corporate treasury, completely unaware that his aunt had forged the valuation certificates to pocket the difference. Now, the international collectors wanted their money or equivalent collateral, and Marisa had run out of time.
To prove the connection, Julia needed an insider from Vance Maritime. She arranged a meeting at a nearby diner with an old shipping clerk named George, who had been fired by Vance two weeks earlier after refusing to sign off on off-book manifests.

George looked exhausted, clutching his ceramic mug as if it were the only anchor keeping him upright. ""Vance isn't working alone, ma'am,"" George muttered, his voice trembling. ""The person authorizing those sealed crates isn't on the company board. She signs off using a private foundation code.""
Julia slid a photograph across the table. It was a picture of Marisa Caruso attending a charity gala with Nicholas Vance standing unobtrusively in the background. George looked down, swallowed hard, and slowly nodded. The link was forged in steel. Julia had the motive, the method, and the timeline. But she still needed the physical diamonds to shatter Marisa's defense in front of Dante and the entire Caruso board.
