Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

On the forty-second floor, the luxurious penthouse suite smelled of expensive leather and betrayal. Peter Cho stood before three massive monitor screens, watching green progress bars creep toward one hundred percent. His tailored suit was immaculate, his demeanor as composed as a surgeon’s. On the desk beside him sat two forged passports and a one-way flight itinerary to Dubai.
""Transfer eighty-nine percent complete,"" the automated system chimed.
Suddenly, the monitors flashed bright amber. A loud electronic buzz pierced the quiet room, and the screen text dissolved into a cascade of corrupted symbols. The transfer halted instantly at ninety-one percent.
""What is this?"" Peter muttered, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. ""Override code alpha-seven-zero-niner! Authorize!""
""Access denied, Peter,"" a cold voice sounded from the doorway.
Peter spun around, his hand instinctively dropping toward the sidearm beneath his armpit. But before his fingers could touch the leather holster, two hotel security officers trained tactical rifles onto his chest, followed closely by Evan Lee and Grace Han. Grace stood tall, her torn bridal dress pinned back with practical hotel linens, her laptop resting open on her forearm, completely overriding his terminal commands.
Peter’s face went completely bloodless. ""Evan... how did you get up here? Marcus was supposed to—""
May you like
""Marcus is currently swimming through storm runoff with a cracked skull,"" Evan interrupted, stepping into the room with steady, measured footsteps. Every trace of the naive young heir had vanished, replaced by the formidable presence of a man who had stared into the abyss and walked out stronger. ""Did you really think so little of me, Peter? Did you think twenty years of loyalty could be discarded for a pile of digital bearer bonds?""
""Loyalty?"" Peter sneered, his mask of professionalism shattering into bitter, venomous resentment. ""Your father treated me like a guard dog! I built your family’s security apparatus from nothing, and when he died, he left ninety percent of the empire to a spoiled child while throwing me corporate stock options that take twenty years to vest! I earned that wealth with my blood! And then you brought this street girl into the inner circle, handing her the encryption keys that should have been mine!"""
