Chapter 1 - The Shattered Vows

At 5:42 on a Saturday evening, the wedding music died three notes into the processional. Two hundred and eleven wealthy guests turned toward the ballroom doors of Boston’s Crown Harbor Hotel, their whispers buzzing beneath the glow of crystal chandeliers. But the heavy oak doors remained firmly shut. Instead of the grand reveal of the bride, an electronic alarm pulsed once through the walls, followed by the blinding snap of emergency lighting. Banqueting staff froze, their rehearsed smiles shattering into sheer panic. Under the majestic arch of imported white orchids, Evan Lee stood completely immobile, his knuckles bone-white as his fingers crushed a single glossy photograph.
His bride was gone. Grace Han, the brilliant, seemingly gentle woman who had held his heart for three long years, had vanished from the bridal suite without leaving so much as a whisper behind. To make matters worse, Evan’s head of security, Peter Cho, was already barking orders into a handheld radio, his veins bulging against his neck. ""Mr. Lee, we have a breach on the lower level. Six of my men are ready to breach the basement stairs right now. They’re coming for you.""
""Tell your men to stand down,"" interrupted Claire Morgan, stepping through the command door with cold authority. As the hotel’s security director, she wasn't easily rattled by the Lee family’s vast wealth or intimidating private guards. She wore a tailored navy suit and flat shoes, looking exhausted yet dangerously focused. Evan had learned over the past forty-eight hours that Claire's calm exterior was the exact warning sign of an incoming storm. ""The last thing this hotel needs is eight armed guards firing weapons through a corridor packed with terrified catering staff,"" Claire warned, looking Peter straight in the eye.
Evan held up a hand, silencing his security chief. ""Stand down, Peter. That's an order."" He looked down again at the photograph in his palm. It was taken barely eighteen hours earlier in the dim service hallway behind Ballroom C. In the frame stood Grace, dressed in her modest cream sweater, handing a high-clearance red keycard directly into the palm of her estranged younger brother, Daniel Han. Daniel was a disgraced ex-convict drowning in illegal gambling debts—a man Evan’s family had specifically placed on the hotel’s blacklisted trespass list. Evan remembered Claire’s chilling warning right outside the ballroom: ""Don’t marry her until you know what she let inside.""

""Where did she go, Claire?"" Evan demanded, his voice thick with betrayal. ""Did she run with Daniel? Did she use me just to wipe his slate clean?""
""She didn't run away, Mr. Lee,"" Claire replied grimly, tapping a tablet screen. ""The red badge was swiped at the sub-basement vault five minutes ago. Someone bypassed our security network from the inside. But Daniel isn't alone down there. Our sensors picked up three men carrying tactical gear. Grace didn't escape—she walked straight into a trap to protect you, or she let monsters right into your fortress. If you want the truth, follow me. And leave your guards behind.""
