Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Wall

Before Marcus Vance could react to Grace's revelation, the emergency floodlights in the vault suddenly flickered and died, plunging the subterranean room into total, suffocating darkness. Claire Morgan had executed her contingency plan—her tactical wristwatch was connected to the hotel’s master breaker via a short-range wireless transmitter.

""Down!"" Claire screamed.

Muzzle flashes erupted in the pitch black, illuminating the room in frantic, terrifying strobes. The deafening roar of automatic gunfire echoed off the steel walls. Evan didn't hesitate; he lunged forward blindly, tackling Grace’s captor around the knees. The heavy guard crashed to the concrete floor, his rifle clattering away into the shadows. Evan drove his elbow into the man’s throat, feeling the crunch of cartilage, fueled by three years of fierce devotion and raw instinct.

Beside him, Daniel found a burst of desperate strength, biting into Vance’s calf. Vance roared in agony, discharging a bullet that ricocheted harmlessly off the steel vault ceiling. In the flickering darkness, Claire moved like a shadow, delivering two precise, close-quarters combat strikes to Vance’s temple, knocking the heavy weapon from his grip.

""Evan! Grab the case!"" Grace gasped, wrapping her arms around his waist as emergency sirens began wailing throughout the entire structure. Red auxiliary lights whirred to life, painting the chamber in a hellish crimson glow.

Vance scrambled backward toward the ventilation escape tunnel, clutching his bleeding face. ""This isn't over, Lee! Cho is already wiping the servers upstairs! You save your little bride, and your family's empire burns to the ground by midnight!"" With a desperate shove, Vance slammed an iron security grate shut behind him, disappearing into the old storm drainage network beneath Boston harbor.

Evan stood panting in the crimson haze, his arms locked fiercely around Grace. She was shaking uncontrollably, her hands covered in soot, oil, and blood, yet she buried her face into his chest, weeping silent tears of relief. ""I'm sorry,"" she whispered over and over. ""I was so terrified you would look at me and only see my brother's crimes... I thought I could fix it myself.""

""You don't ever apologize to me for fighting for your life,"" Evan said fiercely, kissing her forehead through the grime. ""You protected me. Now it's my turn to finish this.""
