Chapter 3 - Footprints in the Dark

Claire led Evan to a heavy blast door marked Mechanical Sector B. The electronic lock panel hung loose, its wires viciously clipped and sparking in the dark. A smear of fresh crimson blood stained the brushed steel handle. Evan’s heart slammed against his ribs. He knelt down, touching the sticky residue with trembling fingers. The scent of Grace’s familiar lavender perfume lingered faintly in the stale subterranean air, unmistakable even amidst the grease and industrial exhaust.
""Grace was here,"" Evan breathed, his voice cracking with an agonizing mixture of fury and despair. ""She’s hurt.""
""Look closer,"" Claire said, shining a tactical penlight across the concrete floor. ""There are three distinct boot prints with heavy military treads, and one set of women's dress flats. The blood belongs to someone who was grazed along the arm—probably Daniel, judging by the scuff marks where he was shoved against the wall. The syndicate leaders aren't just here for extortion anymore, Evan. They realized your wedding provided the perfect media distraction to execute a full heist.""

Evan stared at the torn fabric snagged on an exposed valve pipe. It was delicate lace from Grace’s ivory veil. She had stripped off the heavy outer gown, attempting to maneuver quickly through the utility catacombs. His thoughts flashed back to their first date in Paris three years ago—her shy laughter, her fierce loyalty to her broken family, and how she had sworn she would never let her brother’s reckless mistakes touch their life together. Evan had mistaken her quiet demeanor for weakness, but in reality, she had thrown herself directly into the jaws of wolves to shield him from public ruin and physical death.
Suddenly, a gunshot echoed through the ventilation shaft above them, followed by the muffled sound of a woman crying out in pain. Evan didn't wait for Claire’s warning. Driven by an overwhelming wave of adrenaline, he sprinted forward into the darkened tunnel, discarding his tailored tuxedo jacket as he ran toward the sound of the violent struggle.
