Chapter 8 - The Cornered Wolf

Clare entered Matteo’s office without knocking.

Isabella stood near the window, turning her face away in bitter humiliation. Matteo slowly looked up from his desk. His tie was undone, his expensive shirt wrinkled, his hair disheveled. The aura of untouchable power that had surrounded him for fifteen years had evaporated, leaving behind only the hollow shell of an arrogant man whose empire had collapsed under the weight of his own hubris.

""You won,"" Matteo rasped, leaning back in his leather chair. ""Is that why you're here, Clare? To watch me get handcuffed? To gloat?""

""I don't gloat over garbage, Matteo,"" Clare said evenly, stepping up to his desk and placing a clean legal folder before him. ""I'm here to offer you an exit before the SEC liquidates your family’s name completely.""

Matteo’s eyes narrowed with suspicion. ""An exit?""

""Bennett Maritime is prepared to purchase Terminal Four and your southern deep-water berths at fair market value,"" Clare explained, tapping the contract with her fingertip. ""The capital infusion will satisfy your margin calls with the European banks today. You will avoid criminal bankruptcy, your mother will keep the Beacon Hill estate, and your remaining inland freight yards will stay solvent.""

Matteo looked down at the paper, then back up at her, a bitter smile twisting his lips. ""And what do you get, Clare?""

""Everything you tried to steal from me,"" she answered without hesitation. ""Total control of the Massachusetts waterfront. The Duca family will never operate another cargo vessel in New England waters. You step down as chairman, you hand over your maritime voting shares to the consortium, and you retire from shipping forever.""

Matteo lunged out of his chair, slamming both palms onto the mahogany desk. ""This was my grandfather’s company! You want me to sign away my bloodline to you?!""

""Your bloodline poisoned itself the moment you tried to turn our marriage into an acquisition,"" Clare said, leaning down so her face was only inches from his. Her voice was steady, terrifyingly intimate. ""You thought I was soft because I loved you. You thought my gentleness was weakness. You used my wedding day to humiliate me, you tried to bankrupt my family to keep me compliant, and now you have lost everything. Sign the papers, Matteo, or let the federal marshals handle your retirement.""

Matteo stood there, breathing heavily, searching her hazel eyes for any remnant of the girl who used to laugh at his jokes, who used to touch his cheek in the dark and tell him he was safe with her.

There was nothing left. She had burned the bridge, salted the earth, and bought the ashes.

His hand shook violently as he unscrewed the cap of his fountain pen.

Beside him, Isabella closed her eyes, unable to watch as her son scribbled his signature across the bottom of the surrender documents.

When he finished, he dropped the pen onto the desk. It rolled across the polished wood and clicked against the silver frame containing a photo of Clare from their vacation in Amalfi two years ago.

Clare picked up the signed documents, handed them to Julian, and turned to walk out.

""Clare,"" Matteo called out, his voice cracking, stripped of all pride, sounding almost like a plea. ""Did you ever truly love me?""

May you like

Clare paused at the threshold. She didn't turn around.

""I loved the man you pretended to be,"" she said. ""It's a shame he never existed.""
