Chapter 7 - The Collapse of an Empire

Monday morning dawned with the pale, blinding glare of fresh snow.
At 9:30 AM, the New York Stock Exchange opened. Within five minutes, massive automated sell orders hit Bennett Maritime’s stock, precisely as Natalia’s leaked documents had predicted. But instead of plummeting into panic, the market was met with a stone wall.
At 9:32 AM, the Northern Maritime Consortium—led by Arthur Vance and backed by forty million dollars in liquid capital from a syndicate of independent Maine shippers—began aggressively buying every single share that hit the floor. The price didn't drop; it surged.
Simultaneously, the Federal Trade Commission and the SEC released a joint statement announcing a formal investigation into Duca Logistics for predatory market manipulation and undisclosed offshore debt transfers. By 10:15 AM, trading on Duca Logistics was halted after its valuation plunged thirty-eight percent in forty-five minutes.
Inside his corner office overlooking the frozen Boston Harbor, Matteo Duca watched his monitors turn into a sea of crimson red.
His phone was ringing off the hook—calls from London, Zurich, and New York, creditors demanding immediate collateral for the short positions that had backfired catastrophically. His senior executives stood outside his glass office, pale and terrified, whispering in hushed tones as two federal agents in dark suits entered the lobby downstairs.
The heavy mahogany door opened, but it wasn't the feds.
It was Isabella.
The old woman walked into her son’s office without her usual regal posture. Her cane trembled with every step. She looked at the red numbers cascading down his monitors, then at her only son, whose face had aged ten years in a single weekend.
""What have you done, Matteo?"" she asked, her voice cracking for the first time in her life.
""I had it under control,"" Matteo whispered, staring at his trembling hands on the desk. ""She wasn't supposed to fight back like this. She was supposed to forgive me. Women always forgive.""
""Clare Bennett was not a woman you bought with trinkets, you fool!"" Isabella struck the floor with her cane, her eyes blazing with bitter fury. ""You inherited a century of our family’s sweat and honor, and you risked it all to play mind games with a girl who had more spine than our entire boardroom combined!""

Downstairs, the revolving doors spun open.
Clare Bennett walked into the Duca Logistics headquarters, accompanied by Julian and two federal compliance officers. The staff parted like the Red Sea, staring in stunned silence at the woman who had walked away from their boss seventy-two hours earlier and had now returned holding the keys to his empire.
