Chapter 6 - The Tape and the Trap

The audio file was barely two minutes long, recorded on a hidden phone inside a moving car.
Clare hit play, her heart thumping against her ribs.
“You told me she wouldn't look at the merger annex,” Natalia’s voice said, trembling and sharp with panic.
“Clare doesn't concern herself with our financing,” Matteo’s voice answered, calm, dismissive, and ice-cold. “She’s focused on the ceremony and her family’s legacy. Once the marriage certificates are filed tomorrow afternoon, Bennett Maritime’s voting shares automatically transfer into the combined trust. By the time she realizes the Russo liabilities are attached, the contracts will be irrevocable.”
“And what about the pearls?” Natalia had asked. “You promised them to me if I kept quiet about the Maine terminal purchase.”
“Wear them to the rehearsal,” Matteo had replied with a cold chuckle. “Let Clare see them. It will shake her confidence. When she gets emotional, she stops thinking like an auditor. A woman defending her pride never pays attention to the fine print.”
Clare sat frozen at her kitchen counter as the audio clicked off.
A wave of nausea swept through her, followed immediately by a terrifying, crystalline calm.
It had never been an impulse. It had never been a clumsy attempt at charity. Matteo hadn't given Natalia those pearls out of pity; he had handed her the bracelet as a psychological weapon. He had deliberately provoked Clare at the rehearsal dinner to put her on the defensive, hoping she would react with tears, make a scene, and then meekly accept his lavish ""apology"" the next morning while signing away her family’s sovereignty.
He had miscalculated only one thing: Clare Bennett didn't cry when she was cornered. She attacked.
Below the audio file, Natalia had typed a brief, desperate message:
He threw me away the second you walked out of the cathedral. His mother had two security guards pack my bags and dump me at a motel in Burlington. Matteo thinks I have no leverage. But my father kept every duplicate wire transfer between Duca Logistics and the shell companies in the Cayman Islands. He is planning to force a hostile buyout of Bennett Maritime by shorting your company's stock on Monday morning. Meet me tomorrow at noon at the harbor cafe. Bring your lawyer.
Clare didn't sleep that night.
At 6:00 AM on Sunday, she met Julian and Bennett Maritime’s head of legal in a private conference suite. By 9:00 AM, they had verified the bank routing numbers Natalia had forwarded. Matteo wasn't just planning a merger; he had leveraged Duca Logistics to the hilt, borrowing against his own fleet to artificially inflate the value of his stock while secretly shorting Bennett Maritime through secondary European accounts.
If Clare had married him, the combined entity would have absorbed the shock, leaving Matteo in complete control of both empires while Clare’s family was reduced to minority shareholders. But without the merger, Matteo’s short positions were dangerously exposed. If Bennett Maritime’s stock didn't crash on Monday morning, Matteo would face an unprecedented margin call from his European creditors.

""He didn't think I would pull the trigger,"" Clare said, her eyes flashing. ""Let's call the Securities and Exchange Commission.""
