Chapter 6 - The Receipts of Treason

""Security! Cut her microphone! Remove these people!"" Richard shrieked, backing away from the podium like a cornered animal.

""Nobody moves,"" Arthur Whitmore’s voice boomed across the room, carrying the weight of a man who owned the very hotel we were standing in. ""This facility belongs to the Whitmore Hospitality Group. Every camera in this room will broadcast what happens next, or I will ensure your parent networks never receive another corporate sponsor from my shipping lines again.""

The journalists froze in place, practically holding their breath as red broadcast lights blinked across twenty major television networks.

Daniel plugged my flash drive into the central audiovisual console. The massive digital screens flanking the stage flickered, replacing the hotel logo with high-resolution bank statements, wire transfers, and surveillance photographs.

""Three weeks ago,"" I began, pacing the front of the stage with the cool precision of a veteran auditor, ""Carter Construction’s primary operational account was debited for six hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Richard Carter claimed I stole this money.""

I tapped a small remote control. The screen shifted to an encrypted sports gambling ledger from an offshore casino in Curacao, complete with Richard’s personal social security number and signature.

""The funds were transferred directly to settle Richard Carter’s gambling debts,"" I stated calmly.

The press gallery erupted in frantic typing and muted gasps. Richard slumped against the back curtain, his chest heaving as if he were having a cardiac episode.

""Next,"" I continued, pointing the remote at Vanessa, who was shrinking behind her father, ""my sister Vanessa accused me of possessing narcotics and stealing three million dollars in company profits.""

The screen updated again. This time, crystal-clear 4K surveillance footage played on the massive screens. It showed Vanessa standing at the service counter of an illicit chemical distributor on industrial Tenth Street, handing over an envelope of cash in exchange for the exact plastic bag of pills she had waved in my face two nights ago. Timestamp: Thursday, 4:15 PM—two hours before the blizzard hit.

""Vanessa Carter spent thirty thousand dollars to purchase contraband, drove to my cottage, planted it inside my coat pocket, and called our father home to stage a scene,"" I announced, looking directly into the television lenses. ""And here are the routing records for the three point two million dollars siphoned out of Carter Construction over four years. Every penny went directly into offshore shell accounts belonging entirely to Vanessa Carter.""

""It's a lie! It’s all fabricated!"" Vanessa shrieked hysterically, lunging toward me with her manicured nails bared. ""You manipulated the servers! Dad, do something! Stop her!""

Before she could lay a finger on me, two uniformed female officers from the Colorado State Bureau of Investigation stepped onto the stage, intercepting Vanessa with practiced efficiency. They twisted her arms behind her back, the metallic click of handcuffs echoing through the silent room.

""Vanessa Carter, you are under arrest for grand larceny, interstate wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit aggravated reckless endangerment,"" an investigator stated coldly.

""Dad! Tell them! Dad, save me!"" Vanessa screamed, thrashing against the officers as mascara ran down her cheeks in grotesque black tracks.

Richard didn't move. He couldn't. He was staring at the legal document Arthur had just placed on the podium in front of him.

""You always were an arrogant fool, Richard,"" Arthur whispered, leaning close enough so only the three of us could hear. ""You thought you broke my daughter Eleanor. But she outsmarted you from beyond the grave. Sign the surrender of corporate claims, or the federal marshals waiting outside will charge you as a co-conspirator within five minutes.""
