Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the Denver Metropolitan was suffocating with heat, blinding flashbulbs, and the restless murmur of two hundred journalists, city officials, and industry leaders.
Richard Carter arrived in style, wearing his best tailored suit, pushing his way through the crowd with Vanessa clinging to his arm. Vanessa had dressed in an elaborate designer mourning gown, dabbing at her dry eyes with a lace handkerchief to play the role of the distraught, grieving daughter whose wayward sister had supposedly run away with the company funds.
""Ladies and gentlemen of the press!"" Richard shouted, stepping boldly onto the elevated media platform before the event organizers could stop him. He grabbed the central microphone, projecting an aura of righteous outrage. ""I know why you are all here! You have heard wild rumors about an elderly man claiming to be Arthur Whitmore resurfacing from the dead to attack my business!""
The cameras immediately pivoted toward him, shutters firing in a deafening cadence.
""It is an orchestrated corporate raid!"" Richard bellowed, his face flushed red with theatrical fury. ""Arthur Whitmore passed away in Europe five years ago! This impostor is working with my troubled, drug-addicted daughter, Emily, who stole millions from our family coffers before vanishing into the night! We are the victims here! But Carter Construction will not bow to blackmail!""
Vanessa stepped up beside him, sniffling loudly into the microphone. ""All we ever did was love my sister. We tried to get her into rehab. We tried to save her from her terrible habits. But she repaid our kindness with betrayal and theft. If she is out there watching this... Emily, please, turn yourself in to the police!""
The room erupted into furious murmurs. Several reporters began shouting questions at once.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom swung wide open with a resounding boom that cut through the noise like an axe.
Four private security guards in tactical suits stepped through first, clearing a wide path through the aisle. Behind them walked Daniel, followed by Arthur Whitmore, his presence radiating an aura of untouchable majesty.
And walking arm-in-arm with the billionaire titan was me.
Gasps rippled across the room. Several camera operators stumbled backward as they scrambled to refocus their lenses.
Vanessa’s lace handkerchief dropped from her fingers, fluttering down to the floor. Her jaw went completely slack, her carefully painted facade shattering into sheer, unadulterated horror.
Richard grabbed the podium to steady his shaking knees, his knuckles turning chalk-white. ""E-Emily?!"" he stammered over the live microphone, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak. ""You're... you were...""
""I was supposed to freeze to death on Old Mill Road, wasn't I, Richard?"" My voice cut through the cavernous hall without raising a decibel, amplified by the lapel mic pinned to my silk jacket.
May you like
I walked up the carpeted stairs of the stage, my heels clicking with rhythmic authority. I stood three feet from the man who had cast me into the storm, staring straight into his terrified eyes.
""You told the press I was a thief,"" I said, holding up a sleek black flash drive. ""So let's look at the numbers together. Live on television.""
