Chapter 4 - The Phoenix Rises

Two days of intensive care and state-of-the-art hyperbaric therapy had completely restored my strength. The frostbite on my fingers and toes had been treated before any permanent tissue damage could set in, thanks to the world-class medical staff Arthur retained around the clock.
I stood before the floor-to-ceiling mirror in the executive penthouse suite of the Whitmore Private Estate, staring at the woman looking back at me.
Gone was the exhausted, mouse-like accountant who hid behind oversized sweaters, worn-out sneakers, and messy buns while slaving away to keep her father out of debt. In her place stood an heir.
I wore an ivory bespoke power suit tailored from Italian silk, paired with pointed Louboutin heels and a minimalist diamond necklace that had once belonged to my mother. My honey-brown hair was styled into elegant, polished waves that framed a face sharp with determination. For the first time in thirty-two years, I didn't feel like an unwanted burden. I felt like a tempest.
""You look just like your mother,"" Arthur said softly, walking into the dressing salon with Daniel flanking his side. ""Eleanor had that exact same look in her eyes whenever someone tried to bully her.""
""I spent six years protecting Richard because I thought it was what Mom would have wanted,"" I said, my voice steady, devoid of the hesitation that had plagued my youth. ""I thought if I worked hard enough, he would finally see me. He would finally love me like he loves Vanessa.""
""A snake does not learn to love the hand that feeds it, Emily,"" Arthur said, placing a heavy platinum seal ring onto my index finger. ""It only waits for the hand to weaken so it can strike. But today, we cut off the snake’s head.""
Daniel stepped forward, opening a sleek aluminum briefcase and presenting a stack of blue-bound legal documents.
""Miss Carter,"" Daniel said with a respectful nod. ""The forensic accounting team you supervised has uncovered everything. Over the past four years, Vanessa Carter has siphoned three point two million dollars from Carter Construction through shell entities registered in the Cayman Islands. Furthermore, we pulled the security footage from the pharmacy warehouse where she purchased the unprescribed narcotics she tried to plant on you. We have the text messages between her and Detective Higgins negotiating the payoff.""
I flipped through the pages, examining the cold, hard numbers. My training as a forensic accountant made the trails obvious. Vanessa had been sloppy. She was so convinced of her father's invincibility and my passive obedience that she hadn't even bothered to scrub her digital footprint.
""And the emergency account Richard accused me of emptying?"" I asked.
""Richard emptied it himself three weeks ago to pay off an illegal sports betting syndicate in Atlantic City,"" Daniel answered with a grim smile. ""He blamed you to cover his own tracks before the monthly audit.""
I closed the folder with a sharp, decisive snap. ""Grandpa, is the press conference scheduled for ten?""
May you like
Arthur smiled—a dangerous, predatory grin that reminded the world why he had conquered global shipping. ""The grand ballroom at the Denver Metropolitan Hotel is packed with every major news outlet in the state. Richard and Vanessa are currently on their way there, convinced they can use the media to spin a narrative that I am an impostor trying to steal their family company.""
""Let them come,"" I replied, smoothing the lapels of my ivory blazer. ""It's time to show them who really owns the ground they walk on.""
