Chapter 8 - The Truth in the Silver Watch

By six in the morning, the damp basement smelled of ozone, old ink, and the sharp scent of cold rain filtering down through the ventilation grates. On the metal desk sat three neat, red-ribboned binders containing ironclad, certified proof of Charles Sterling’s extortion, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement.

Ryan stood up, stretching his exhausted muscles. He reached out and picked up my grandfather's pocket watch, holding it out to me in the palm of his hand.

“It belongs to you,” he said softly.

I took the watch, feeling the cold weight of the silver against my skin. The intricate engraving on the back—my grandfather’s initials—was polished clean of the grit and rain from that fateful night. I looked up at Ryan. His suit was wrinkled, his jaw covered in dark stubble, but he had never looked more magnificent.

“Take this with you,” I whispered, pressing the watch back into his hand, folding his long fingers over the silver casing. “Take it into the boardroom. So you remember who you are.”

He closed his eyes, holding the watch tight against his chest, nodding once. “Come with me.”

“To the board meeting?”

“You are the executive secretary to the Chief Executive Officer,” Ryan said, a ghost of a proud, triumphant smile touching his lips for the first time in five years. “No one records the minutes of Charles Sterling’s ruin except you.”

We took the private elevator directly up to the penthouse floor. As the numbers climbed—10, 20, 30, 40, 45—the grime of the basement was replaced by the gleam of polished brass, panoramic glass, and morning sunlight breaking through the clouds over Central Park.

When the elevator doors opened onto the executive suite, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Armed federal agents in plainclothes were already waiting quietly in the side corridors, flanked by Ryan’s head of private security.

Outside the boardroom doors, Rebecca Sterling stood pacing in an emerald silk dress, her phone pressed to her ear. When she saw Ryan stepping off the elevator—disheveled, exhausted, yet walking with the predatory grace of a king going to battle—and saw me walking directly beside him, holding the red-ribboned dossiers, her phone dropped an inch from her ear.

“Ryan?” she stammered, her eyes darting to my face with sudden, venomous suspicion. “What is this? Where have you been? Tyler was supposed to—”

She choked on her own words, realizing too late what she had almost admitted.

“Tyler is currently being detained by federal marshals in the parking garage, Rebecca,” Ryan said, his voice ringing through the lobby with absolute authority. “And your father’s meeting is about to begin.”
