Chapter 6 - When the Empire Trembled

The word hung in the damp air like a physical shockwave.
Loved.
Tyler let out a bitter, breathless laugh, snapping the velvet ring box shut. “You expect her to believe this fairy tale? You kept her in an administrative cage for five years, let Rebecca treat her like dirt, and now you claim it was all to protect her? You’re a coward, Kensington. You have billions of dollars and you’re terrified of an old man with a stack of paper.”
Ryan didn’t even blink. He didn't yell. He didn't throw a punch. He merely turned his eyes toward Tyler, his expression hardening into pure, unyielding granite.
“Mr. Harrison,” Ryan said with deadly calm. “Do you think I don't know who authorized your keycard access to Sub-Level Three tonight?”
Tyler froze. The smirk vanished from his face, replaced by a sudden, sickening panic.
“What?” I looked between the two men, a cold dread clawing at my stomach.
“Sub-Level Three is restricted to Tier-1 executive clearance,” Ryan said coldly, pulling his phone from his pocket and tapping the screen. “Tyler is an analyst in acquisitions. His badge doesn't work past the tenth floor. Yet here he is, carrying a five-thousand-dollar diamond ring he couldn't afford on his salary, arriving precisely when I stepped away to meet with the board.”
Ryan turned the phone screen toward us. It displayed an encrypted internal server log.
“Twenty minutes ago, an unauthorized download request was routed from terminal B-4 down here to an external IP address registered to Sterling Global Capital. Someone didn't come down here to rescue you, Sullivan. Someone came down here to retrieve the original deeds before I could deliver them to the Department of Justice tomorrow morning.”
My gaze snapped to Tyler. His trembling hands weren't shaking from love or nervousness anymore; they were shaking from pure terror.
“Tyler...?” My voice was barely a squeak. “Is that true?”
“Mia, listen to me,” Tyler stammered, backing toward the elevator corridor. “You don't understand the power the Sterlings have. Charles offered me a senior vice president role in London. He told me Kensington Holdings was going to be liquidated by the end of next week anyway! He said Ryan was going to prison! I... I wanted to take you with me! I really do care about you!”
“You used her,” Ryan roared, stepping forward, his fist cracking against the heavy metal table with such force that the files jumped. “You used her trust, you used her kindness, and you used the only thing that mattered to me in this wretched building to cover your theft!”

Tyler didn’t wait for another word. He panicked, turning on his heel and bolting toward the emergency stairwell door, shoving it open and disappearing into the echoing concrete stair shaft.
I stood frozen beside the industrial shredder, the world spinning out of control. The man who had brought me tea, the man who had offered me a safe escape from this cold life, was nothing more than a paid pawn sent to destroy the company. And the man who had acted like ice for half a decade was bleeding his soul out onto the concrete floor.
