Chapter 10 - Where the Rain Began

One month later.

The fall of the Sterling family had rocked Wall Street, but Kensington Holdings had not collapsed. Stripped of the fraudulent debts and corrupt board members, the company surged with unprecedented momentum. The air inside the glass tower was completely different now—lighter, cleaner, free of the toxic fear that had suffocated it for a decade.

It was a Friday evening, and a gentle autumn rain was tapping against the windows of the executive suite.

I was at my desk, packing my things into a small cardboard box. I had submitted my official resignation as executive secretary three days earlier. I loved Ryan with every fiber of my being, but five years of silence and survival had left wounds that needed time to heal. I couldn't be his secretary anymore, and I didn't want to live in the shadow of his tower.

The office was empty. The lights had already been turned down to their warm night settings.

The heavy door to the CEO suite opened. Ryan stepped out.

He wasn't wearing his bespoke suit jacket. He wore a simple dark sweater, slacks, and a long wool coat draped over his arm. He looked younger, softer, the crushing lines of stress completely erased from his handsome face.

He stopped beside my desk, looking down at the cardboard box.

“Are you sure about this, Sullivan?” he asked softly.

I smiled, looking up at him. “You don't need a secretary anymore, Ryan. You need a partner. And I need to find out who Mia Sullivan is when she isn't running an empire from behind a desk.”

Ryan nodded slowly. He didn't argue. He didn't use his authority to demand that I stay. Instead, he reached into his pocket and pulled out my grandfather’s silver watch, placing it gently into my hands.

“I resigned too,” he said.

I stared at him, stunned. “What?”

“I appointed an interim CEO this afternoon,” Ryan said, a brilliant, genuine smile spreading across his face—the first true smile I had ever seen him give. “The board approved it. I spent five years of my life chained to my father’s mistakes, trying to save an empire that was slowly killing me. You taught me that I don't have to carry his sins anymore.”

He reached out and took my cardboard box in one hand, offering his other hand to me.

“I have a lot of lost time to make up for,” Ryan whispered, his dark eyes shining with pure devotion. “And I want to spend it with the only woman who ever saw the man beneath the ice.”

My heart swelled with an overwhelming wave of warmth. I slipped my hand into his, his fingers wrapping tightly, protectively around mine.

We rode the elevator down together, not as boss and subordinate, but as two free souls stepping into a brand-new world. When the doors of the lobby opened, the cool evening air rushed in to meet us.

Outside, rain was pouring onto the pavement near Grand Central Terminal.

Ryan stopped under the awning, right where we had met five years ago. He looked out at the glistening streets, then turned back to me, pulling me gently against his chest.

“Do you remember what you asked me that night?” Ryan whispered, his hand gently cupping my cheek.

“I asked if you wanted a coffee,” I answered, tears of happiness blurring my vision.

May you like

“No,” Ryan murmured, leaning down until his lips were inches from mine. “You asked me what mistakes actually belonged to me.”

He closed the distance, pressing his lips to mine in a kiss that erased five years of cold silence, five years of longing, and five years of pain. Under the rain in the heart of Manhattan, the Ice King melted completely, and in his arms, I finally found home."
