Chapter 8 - The Silent Vigil

The surgical waiting room at Massachusetts General Hospital was a purgatory of sterile fluorescent lights and the agonizing hum of industrial ventilation.

It was 4:00 AM. Emma sat motionless on a vinyl chair, her clothes still stained with Nathaniel’s blood, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. Dean Foster stood vigil by the door, his navy suit rumpled, his expression somber and protective.

“Emma,” Dean said gently, walking over and offering her a paper cup of hot tea. “Drink this. You’re in shock.”

She stared at the tea, shaking her head. “How is he?”

“He’s been in surgery for six hours,” Dean answered, pulling up a chair beside her. “He lost a tremendous amount of blood, but Nathaniel is the stubbornest bastard on the planet. He won't go down easy.”

Emma wiped a dry tear from her cheek, staring down at her stained hands. “This is my fault. If I hadn't made that stupid comment about you... if he hadn't promoted me to keep me close... he wouldn't have been in that warehouse.”

Dean let out a soft, dry chuckle.

Emma looked up, surprised. “What’s funny?”

“Emma, do you really think Nathaniel Kane noticed you because of a five-second comment about my face?” Dean asked, shaking his head. “I’ve worked for Nathaniel for four years. The man never looked at another human being the way he looked at you. For eleven months, he showed up at the office two hours early just to read your morning briefing notes. He personally approved every vendor for your favorite breakroom coffee. He fired a partner who spoke rudely to you on the phone last spring and made it look like a contract dispute.”

Emma’s heart stopped. “What?”

“Nathaniel was terrified of you,” Dean said with a genuine, warm smile. “The most ruthless man in Boston was terrified that if he told you how he felt, you’d resign and walk out of his life. That comment about me? It was just the excuse he desperately needed to tear down the wall.”

Before Emma could respond, the heavy double doors of the surgical wing swung open.

A tired surgeon in blood-spattered scrubs walked out, pulling his mask down. Emma bolted to her feet, her breath trapped in her throat.

“Doctor?”

The surgeon looked at her, his face softening with a tired smile. “The bullet missed the main artery by three millimeters. He suffered internal bleeding, but we repaired the damage. Mr. Kane is in recovery. He’s stable, Miss Caldwell. He’s going to make a full recovery.”

Emma collapsed back against the chair, burying her face in her hands as a wave of overwhelming, sobbing relief broke through her chest.
