Chapter 10 - The Master of My Heart

Emma stared at the ring, her hand flying to her mouth. The sheer brilliance of the stone was blinding, but it was the naked devotion in Nathaniel’s eyes that brought fresh tears spilling over her lashes.

“Nathaniel...” she whispered, completely breathless.

“I’ve built an empire out of control, Emma,” he said, his voice steady, ringing with absolute conviction. “I controlled politicians, shipping routes, millions of dollars, and every person who dared cross my path. But from the second you told me I was ridiculous in my own office, I realized I didn't want control anymore. I wanted you. I want to build a life with you. I want to protect you, cherish you, and spend every single day earning your love.”

He held the ring out toward her, his dark eyes waiting, vulnerable for the first time in his life.

“Emma Caldwell, will you marry me?”

Emma let out a wet, joyful laugh. She leaned down, wrapping her arms around his neck, careful not to jostle his bandaged torso, and pressed her lips to his in a passionate, lingering kiss that answered every question left between them.

“Yes,” she whispered against his lips, smiling as he slid the heavy ring onto her finger, a perfect fit. “Yes, Nathaniel. A thousand times yes.”

Six months later, Kane Maritime headquarters was buzzing with frantic energy. The company had consolidated its control over the entire Atlantic seaboard, Christian Kane was serving twenty-five years in federal prison, and the corporate empire was stronger than ever.

Emma walked through the executive floor, dressed in an elegant ivory blazer and tailored trousers, holding a stack of operational reports. The diamond on her left hand caught the sunlight, throwing prisms across the polished marble.

Dean Foster was standing near the elevator, looking as sharp as ever in his navy suit. As Emma approached, he gave her a crisp, respectful nod.

“Morning, Mrs. Kane.”

Emma smiled warmly. “Good morning, Dean. How is the security detail for the harbor gala tonight?”

“Locked down tight,” Dean replied with a knowing grin. “Though Mr. Kane has personally requested three extra guards around you at all times. He insists you have a habit of attracting trouble.”

“I think he’s the trouble,” Emma laughed.

Right on cue, the heavy mahogany double doors of the corner office swung open.

Nathaniel Kane stepped out into the reception area. He looked magnificent in a bespoke three-piece midnight suit, his hair perfectly styled, radiating an aura of absolute power and authority. But the moment his gaze landed on Emma, the cold corporate titan vanished, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated adoration.

He walked straight toward her, completely ignoring the whispering staff and busy executives who parted like the sea before him. He wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side, and kissed her soundly on the lips in full view of the entire floor.

“You’re late for our strategy meeting, Mrs. Kane,” he murmured against her mouth, a dangerous, playful gleam in his dark eyes.

Emma wrapped her arms around his neck, biting back a smirk. “My watch says I have three minutes, Mr. Kane.”

“If you are not ten minutes early, you are late,” he quoted with a slow, wicked grin.

“Is that so?” Emma whispered, tilting her head, her green eyes sparkling with mischief. “And what are you going to do about it? Reassign me?”

May you like

Nathaniel laughed—a deep, rich sound that echoed through the magnificent glass office—before leaning down to capture her lips once more.

“Never,” he whispered against her skin, holding her tight against his heart. “You’re staying right where you belong.”"
