Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Shadows

Morning broke over Lake Michigan in pale gold light, filtering through the sheer curtains of the penthouse. Emma woke to the heavy weight of Nathaniel’s arm draped over her waist, his face buried in her hair. For a fleeting hour, wrapped in Egyptian cotton and quiet warmth, the outside world ceased to exist.

She turned in his embrace, tracing the rough stubble of his jawline. His eyes opened slowly, dark and fathomless, but softened by an unguarded tenderness that he offered to no one else on earth.

“Good morning,” he murmured, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead.

“We have to go back to Boston,” she whispered, resting her cheek against his chest. “The person who took that shot... they won't stop.”

Nathaniel’s expression hardened, the gentle lover retreating behind the mask of the ruthless commander. “They won't get another chance. My intelligence team traced the shooter's vehicle last night. The contract was paid through an offshore shell corporation tied directly to the Port of Boston.”

Emma frowned, sitting up while pulling the sheets around her. “The port? But Kane Maritime owns the primary leases on those docks.”

“Not all of them,” Nathaniel said, swinging his legs out of bed, his stitched shoulder flexing. “My estranged brother, Christian Kane, controls the southern terminals. He’s been laundering cartel money through our joint heritage accounts for years. I warned him last week that I was freezing the trust. Chicago was his retaliation.”

The name Christian Kane hit Emma like a bucket of ice water. She recalled an encrypted dossier she had filed away six months ago—a file Nathaniel had strictly forbidden anyone from opening.

Before they could speak further, Nathaniel’s encrypted phone buzzed violently on the nightstand. He picked it up, listening in silence for ten seconds before his knuckles turned white against the glass casing.

“Understood. Lock down the terminal. We’re wheels up in twenty minutes.”

He ended the call and turned to Emma, his face like carved granite.

“What happened?” she asked, panic fluttering in her stomach.

“Christian just staged a hostile takeover of the central Boston shipping terminal,” Nathaniel said, his voice flat and lethal. “And he’s using your name on the forged manifestos to frame Kane Maritime for federal smuggling.”
