Chapter 9 - The Standing Ovation

The French doors opened, and I walked out onto the sunlit veranda.

I wore an ethereal, backless emerald silk gown that shimmered like sea glass in the late afternoon sun, my dark hair swept up in an elegant chignon, wearing my mother's heirloom pearl-and-diamond pendant around my neck.

Beside me walked my father, Arthur Vance, looking every bit the proud patriarch, standing tall and unbowed before the society that had ignored him for a decade.

A moment of stunned silence fell over the lawn as the guests processed the announcement.

Then, Senator Tyler Sterling Sr.—the groom's father—stepped out from the front row, his weathered face breaking into a wide, booming smile of recognition.

"By God, Arthur Vance!" the senator bellowed, raising his champagne glass high. "I haven't seen you since our days on the maritime trade commission! So this magnificent girl is Claire's daughter?"

The senator began clapping with thunderous enthusiasm.

Within three seconds, the entire lawn—two hundred of Charleston’s most powerful and influential citizens—erupted into a standing ovation, raising their crystal flutes to toast the true lady of the manor.

Down in the receiving line, Aunt Victoria looked like she had been struck by lightning.

Her knees buckled, and she had to clutch the back of a garden chair to keep from hitting the flagstones.

Her grand illusion of high-society matriarchy had dissolved in front of every person whose approval she had spent forty years chasing.

She was no longer the patroness of an eleven-million-dollar dynasty; she was simply a guest whose daughter was being permitted to marry on her niece's lawn out of pure charity.

Madison emerged from the bridal suite in her full lace gown, her veil fluttering in the ocean wind, her face pale as a ghost as she watched the entire society world showering me with applause.

I leaned down to the microphone, looking across the vast expanse of ocean, then down at the sea of smiling faces.

"Welcome to my home, everyone," I spoke softly, my voice rich with peace, strength, and unconditional grace. "Let us celebrate love, truth, and the enduring power of family."

The string quartet swelled into Pachelbel’s Canon, and the ceremony began under a sky of pure, cloudless Carolina blue.
