Chapter 1 - The Secret in the Cedar Chest

The embossed legal seal at the bottom of the parchment page seemed to burn straight through my fingertips.

The Gull’s Rest Revocable Trust — Sole Beneficiary: Allison Claire Vance.

I sat cross-legged on my hardwood floor, surrounded by thirty-year-old quilt squares, faded legal folios, and the fragrant tang of aged cedar.

Daniel knelt across from me, his dark eyes wide as he picked up the second document from the bottom of the trunk.

"Allison," Daniel spoke, his deep voice dropping into an incredulous hush. "This isn't an old deed. This is a perpetual land patent and irrevocable family trust registered with the South Carolina state chancery in 1994."

My breath caught in my throat.

For twelve agonizing years, every single family holiday had featured the exact same sermon from Aunt Victoria.

Whenever I asked why my mother's estate had left me with zero savings and a mountain of student loans, Victoria would dab her eyes with a lace handkerchief and sigh about astronomical hospital copays. She claimed she had personally liquidated Gull’s Rest at a heavy loss just to keep my mother in a private hospice room.

My father had sat at the edge of those holiday tables, nodding in passive agreement, convinced his sister was the noble savior of our broken household.

"She lied," I whispered, the words tasting like copper and ash on my tongue. "Gull’s Rest was never sold."

Daniel pulled his smartphone from his jacket pocket, his thumbs flying across the Charleston County tax assessor database.

Within two minutes, the public land registry lit up his screen.

"Gull’s Rest," Daniel read aloud, pointing at the property tax profile. "Twelve oceanfront acres on Sullivan’s Island. Private dock, historic antebellum manor house, private dunes, and maritime forest. Assessed market value: eleven point four million dollars."

He scrolled down to the recorded taxpayer entity.

"Taxes are paid annually by an offshore LLC named Lowcountry Heritage Trust," Daniel added, looking straight into my eyes. "Registered agent of record: Victoria Vance Sterling."

A sharp, hysterical laugh escaped my lips.

My cousin Madison wasn't having her wedding brunch in Victoria’s suburban garden because she wanted an "intimate" celebration.

Madison’s lavish four-hundred-guest society wedding had been booked for eighteen months at the most coveted oceanfront sanctuary in the state: Gull’s Rest.

And Aunt Victoria had deliberately banned me from the guest list because she couldn't afford to let me walk onto the grounds my dead mother had left me in blood and ink.
