Chapter 8 - The Arrival of Society

By 4:30 PM, the crushed-shell circular driveway of Gull’s Rest was packed with black Mercedes, Bentleys, and Rolls-Royces carrying the elite of Charleston society.
State senators, bank presidents, historic preservation board members, and socialite matriarchs stepped out onto the lawn, admiring the breathtaking ocean views and the magnificent antebellum architecture.
In the center of the terrace, a five-piece string quartet played Vivaldi under the shade of the live oaks.
Guests were served vintage champagne and chilled canapés by a fleet of tuxedoed waitstaff.
At the front entrance, Aunt Victoria stood in the receiving line, her smile rigid and frozen like porcelain, her hands trembling every time a guest complimented her on "her magnificent ancestral estate."
"Victoria, darling!" gushed Mrs. Eleanor Rutledge, the grand dame of the Charleston Historical Society, kissing both of Victoria’s cheeks. "To have kept this glorious property in the family for all these years... you truly are the guardian of the Vance heritage."
Before Victoria could force out a stammered reply, a clear, musical chime sounded from the master veranda above the lawn.
The guests turned their heads toward the wide marble terrace.
Standing at the mahogany microphone, beside a massive framed portrait of my mother Claire smiling in her garden, was Marcus Alden.
"Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen," Marcus spoke, his resonant Southern baritone carrying effortlessly across the manicured grounds. "On behalf of the Vance family, we welcome you to Gull’s Rest."
A polite round of applause rippled through the distinguished crowd.
"Before our lovely bride walks down the aisle," Marcus continued with a charming, knowing smile, "we have an extraordinary announcement to make regarding the historic preservation of this beloved Charleston jewel."
Victoria’s breath caught in her throat. She stepped forward, waving frantically at Marcus to stop, but two uniformed deputies subtly shifted into position near the terrace steps, blocking her path.
"As many of you know," Marcus declared, "this twelve-acre oceanfront sanctuary was established in 1994 under the perpetual guardianship of the late Claire Vance."

He extended an arm toward the double French doors leading out from the master ballroom.
"And today, on her thirty-second birthday, we officially celebrate the transfer of Gull’s Rest into the permanent, sole ownership of Claire’s daughter and rightful heir—Miss Allison Claire Vance!"
