Chapter 8 - The Verdict And The Sentence

The jury deliberated for less than ninety minutes.

When the foreperson stood to read the verdict, the courtroom held its collective breath.

"On the count of aggravated domestic assault against a pregnant person, we find the defendant, Grant Whitaker, guilty."

"On the count of witness intimidation, we find the defendant guilty."

"On the count of accessory to grand larceny, we find the defendant guilty."

Judge Eleanor Campbell, a veteran jurist renowned for her zero-tolerance stance on domestic abuse, did not delay sentencing. She looked down from the bench with piercing, uncompromising eyes that pinned Grant to his seat.

"Mr. Whitaker, you are a man who possessed immense wealth, societal privilege, and every advantage life could offer," Judge Campbell stated, her voice ringing with absolute moral authority. "Yet, behind the closed doors of your private home, you acted as a cowardly brute who struck a defenseless woman carrying your own flesh and blood."

Grant stood trembling beside his attorney, his arrogance finally stripped down to raw, pathetic terror.

"I sentence you to seven years in the state correctional facility, with a mandatory minimum of four years before parole eligibility."

The judge’s wooden gavel struck the sound block with a thunderous finality.

Two bailiffs immediately stepped behind Grant, ratcheting his wrists into transport cuffs and leading him through the secure side door toward the holding cells.

He turned back once, his eyes desperately searching for mine in the gallery, silently begging for a flicker of forgiveness or remorse.

I met his gaze with absolute, unyielding calm, and slowly turned my back to walk out into the bright morning light.
