Chapter 7 - The Trial Of Hubris

Six months later, the downtown county courthouse was packed to maximum capacity for the high-profile criminal trial of The State v. Grant Whitaker.
Grant sat at the defense table in a pristine charcoal suit, but the arrogant posture he had carried for years was completely hollowed out. His face was gaunt, his eyes sunken, and his former mistress Vanessa was nowhere to be found—having accepted a plea deal two months earlier that required her to testify fully against him in exchange for probation.
When my uncle Arthur called me to the witness stand, a reverent hush fell over the packed gallery.
I walked down the aisle with my head held high, wearing a simple navy blazer and my mother’s gold watch on my wrist. I did not look at Grant as I took the oath, swearing to tell the whole truth.
The prosecuting attorney stepped forward and pressed play on the central courtroom monitors.
The video footage from my kitchen camera flickered onto the large screens in crystal-clear definition.
The courtroom fell into an appalled, breathless silence as Grant’s voice filled the room: "Say one more word."
Then came my steady reply: "I already called 911."
And then, the sickening, sharp crack of his hand striking my face echoed off the high oak ceilings.
Several jurors visibly flinched, two of them turning their heads away in disgust.
Grant slumped lower in his defense chair, staring at the polished wood table as his own defense attorney placed a hand over his face in defeat.

There was no legal defense for what was captured on that screen.
There were no spin doctors who could erase the brutal truth of a man who chose cruelty over the life of his unborn child.
