Chapter 6 - The Emergency Room Miracle

Two weeks after the arrest, the immense stress of the public scandal triggered early labor.

I was rushed into the labor and delivery wing at St. Luke’s under round-the-clock private security guards hired by my uncle Arthur. There were no press leaks, no unwanted visitors, and no unfaithful husbands pacing the floor with wandering eyes.

My daughter was born on a rainy Tuesday morning at precisely 8:14 AM.

She weighed five pounds and eight ounces, with a shock of thick dark hair and bright, alert hazel eyes that mirrored my own.

When the nurse placed her against my bare chest, the tiny girl let out a fierce, indignant cry that filled the delivery room with undeniable life.

"Look at you, my brave girl," I whispered, tears of profound relief streaming down my face as I kissed her warm, delicate forehead. "Your name is Maya. Maya Margaret Whitaker."

Outside the hospital, Grant had attempted to force his way past the private security desk three separate times, waving an invalid court petition claiming parental visitation rights.

Each time, the off-duty state troopers stationed at the doors escorted him off the premises under threat of immediate bond revocation.

A judge had signed an emergency permanent restraining order barring Grant from coming within five hundred yards of me or Maya until his criminal trial concluded.

He was a father on paper, but in the eyes of the law, he was merely an indicted felon awaiting his sentence.
