Chapter 7 - Victoria's Fall from Grace

By nightfall, the fallout from the cathedral had obliterated what remained of the Blackwood dynasty. News outlets across the globe ran front-page images of Nathaniel being pinned to the altar floor, contrasted sharply against the photographs of my battered body standing tall above him. Social media platforms exploded with millions of shares, turning the hashtag #TheAltarTruth into a global rallying cry against domestic violence and corporate greed.
At the federal detention facility in lower Manhattan, Victoria Blackwood sat in a sterile, fluorescent-lit holding cell, stripped of her designer gown, her pearls, and her dignity. She wore an oversized orange jumpsuit, her styled hair disheveled and unwashed, her face pale and sunken without her customary layers of cosmetic armor.
Across the stainless-steel table sat her chief legal counsel, a veteran partner from one of Wall Street's most ruthless defense firms. The man looked exhausted, his tie loosened, piles of court injunctions spread before him.
""What do you mean, you can't post bail?"" Victoria hissed, her fingers clawing at the cold steel tabletop. ""I have eighty million dollars in liquid capital in the Manhattan Bank reserves! Get the judge on the phone! We pay his campaign contributions!""
""Mrs. Blackwood, you aren't listening,"" the lawyer said quietly, running a trembling hand across his forehead. ""There are no reserves. The Southern District froze all domestic accounts at two-fifteen this afternoon. The Swiss authorities, acting on an emergency red notice from Interpol, have locked your Zurich vaults. Every asset connected to your name is seized under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.""
Victoria gasped, clutching her chest. ""That’s impossible! What about our private real estate? The Hamptons estate! The penthouse!""
""Forensic accountants discovered that the initial purchase funds for both properties were laundered directly from the Hawthorne Capital employee pension pool,"" the attorney replied, looking away from her frantic gaze. ""Those properties aren't yours anymore. As of four o'clock today, the court appointed a federal receiver to oversee the transfer of those titles directly to the newly reorganized Hawthorne Restitution Fund.""
""Elena..."" Victoria snarled, the name tasting like poison on her lips. ""That little bitch took everything!""
""No, Victoria,"" a voice spoke from the doorway.
The attorney stood up immediately as the heavy steel door buzzed open. I stepped into the interrogation room, dressed in a sharp, tailored navy suit, carrying a slim leather briefcase. The dark bruises on my neck were still visible, but my posture was straight, commanding, and unshakable.
""She didn't take anything,"" I said, pulling out a chair and sitting opposite the woman who had spent months telling me I was nothing. ""I simply returned what you stole to the families you destroyed.""

Victoria glared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred. ""You think you’ve won? You’ll never survive the board of directors. Those men have run Wall Street for forty years. They will tear you to pieces before you ever sit in my husband's chair.""
I smiled faintly, opening my briefcase to extract a single sheet of paper bearing seven signatures. ""You haven't checked the news, have you, Victoria? The board held an emergency session two hours ago. In exchange for non-prosecution agreements regarding their secondary oversight failures, every single director unanimously voted to confirm me as Chief Executive Officer of the restructured corporation.""
