Chapter 6 - The Confession in Handcuffs

The federal convoy pulled away from the stone steps of St. Andrew’s Cathedral with tires screaming against the asphalt, leaving behind a wake of flashing red-and-blue lights that painted the gray granite facade of Fifth Avenue. Through the heavily tinted windows of the lead cruiser, Nathaniel Blackwood pressed his bruised forehead against the security partition, hyperventilating as the cold steel of the cuffs bit deep into his wrists.
Beside him sat Special Agent Marcus Vance, his pen hovering impassively over a legal pad.
""You need to listen to me,"" Nathaniel babbed, his aristocratic voice cracking into a ragged plea. ""Elena engineered the entire thing. She baited me! She was deliberately looking through my private files to provoke a reaction! Any man would have lost his temper! You can't charge me with felony assault over a marital dispute!""
Agent Vance didn't even look up from his notes. ""Mr. Blackwood, we have forty-eight hours of synchronized audio-video evidence recorded from the hidden pinhole cameras our technicians installed in your living room ceiling during your trip to the Hamptons last month. We have you on tape stating, and I quote, 'If you ever mention the Hawthorne accounts again, I will make sure they find your body in the East River alongside your pathetic father.' That isn't a marital dispute. That is premeditated terroristic threat combined with felony assault.""
Nathaniel slumped back against the vinyl seat, the breath rushing out of his lungs in a ragged gasp. The walls were closing in, completely solid, leaving no loopholes, no high-priced defense lawyers who could make this disappear, and no political allies who would dare answer his calls.
Back inside the cathedral, the media circus had reached a fever pitch. Cameramen shoved past private security, their microphones thrust toward the altar steps where I stood composed, wrapped in the dark wool overcoat that Agent Vance’s partner had draped over my bare shoulders.
""Mrs. Blackwood! Over here!""
""Elena! Is it true that the entire Blackwood real estate portfolio is facing liquidation?""
""Did you marry him solely to avenge your father's death?""
I raised a single hand, and the roaring press pack fell instantly silent.
May you like
""I married Nathaniel Blackwood to enforce the law where the system failed,"" I spoke directly into the center cluster of microphones, my voice clear and unwavering. ""For decades, families like the Blackwoods believed their wealth granted them immunity from the consequences of theft, violence, and human destruction. They believed my father was a disposable casualty in their pursuit of unearned power. Today proves that no empire is too large to fall, no name is too sacred to be held accountable, and no woman is obligated to suffer in silence to protect a monster's reputation.""
I turned my back on the cameras, walking calmly down the private vestry hallway. Behind me, the reporters scrambled for the exits, racing to file the biggest breaking headline New York had seen in fifty years.
